Radio Gdansk English Service: Duda at Holocaust commemorations

The President of Poland, Andrzej Duda, has said the world „must never forget” the Holocaust as world leaders and Holocaust survivors met to mark 75 years since the liberation of the Auschwitz death camp.
The President said  “Hatred, chauvinism, nationalism, racism and anti-Semitism took the form of a massive, organised and methodical extermination operation,”

He and Israeli President, Reuven Rivlin, laid wreathes together at a ceremony on the sight of the Death Wall, where countless people, mostly Jews, were murdered by Nazi Germany.

The ceremony was also attended by more than 200 former prisoners as well as leaders and officials from more than 50 countries.

The Auschwitz-Birkenau camp in Nazi-occupied Poland saw over 1.1 million people killed before it was liberated by the Red Army in January 1945.

CORONAVIRUS DEATHS REACH 100

In China, authorities have said that the number of deaths in the ongoing coronavirus epidemic has now surpassed 100 people.

The number of confirmed cases of the virus is now past 4,500, up from 2,800 yesterday.

The Chinese government has been increasing travel restrictions in an attempt to slow down the virus. Serveral other countries, including the United States, have also advised their citizens the reconsider travel to China.

Internationally, Canada, Australia, and Germany have now reported cases of the virus. The US now has five confirmed cases while France has three. Both the UK and Poland so far have no known cases of the virus.

However, health officials have stressed that the chance of further transmission is low and so far there have been no deaths outside China.

The vast majority of those infected recover fully, even in severe cases, and Chinese health experts said on Tuesday that one week was enough to recover from mild symptoms.

Polish Health Ministry has said there is no epidemiological threat to Poland and the Foreign Ministry is understood to be working to evacuate Poles in the worst affected areas of China.

Speaking to media on Monday, Świątek said she was satisfied with her results and said she hadn’t expected to make it so far.
