The US presidential election is looking set for a two horse race between Republican Donald Trump and Democrat Joe Biden as the last remaining contender for the democratic nomination, Bernie Sanders, drops out.
Mr Sanders, an independent senator from Vermont and a self-described democratic socialist, had been a favourite early in the race but slipped behind in recent weeks as moderate candidates rallied around Biden.
In a video recorded at home, Sanders announced yesterday he could see no feasible path to victory and was suspending his campaign.
With Sanders out of the running, the democratic nomination will be go to Biden, who served as Vice President under Barack Obama.
It means the US election is set for a final race between Joe Biden and incumbent Donald Trump in November.
Across the Atlantic, Britain’s Prime Minister Boris Johnson is reported to be making progress as he remains in intensive care with Covid-19.
The PM, who was diagnosed with coronavirus two weeks ago, was taken into St. Thomas’ hospital in London over the weekend after his symptoms worsened.
But Mr Johnson is now reported to be „responding to treatment” and is breathing without support.
However the news comes as deaths in the UK begin to soar, with 938 deaths reported yesterday and reaching a total of more than 7000.
The European Court of Justice has ruled that Poland must suspend a controversial disciplinary chamber in its Supreme Court amid questions about its independence.
The disciplinary chamber was set up as part of judicial reforms by the ruling Law & Justice party, allowing judges to be investigated and disciplined for „political activity”.
But critics, including the European Commission, have said the changes would damage the independence of the judicial system.
The Commission also says the chamber itself is not independent as it made up of justices chosen by the National Judicial Council (KRS).
The ECJ ruled on Wednesday that the chamber must be immediate suspended until it gives a final ruling later this year.
The Polish government has argued this is beyond the scope of the ECJ and violates its rights as a member state.
Poland now has one month to comply with the ruling. If it fails to suspend the court, the European Commission will be able to ask for a fine against Poland.
Gdansk has recorded its first death from Covid 19.
According to reports, the victim is understood to be an elderly man in his 70s and suffered from preexisting conditions.
He died at the 7th Naval Hospital in Gdansk.
As of this morning, a total of 159 people are known to have died of the virus in Poland.
