Poland is preparing to reimpose stricter COVID-19 measures in some of its worst affected areas, officials have announced, amid a spike in infections.
Deputy Health Minister Janusz Cieszyński told reporters that renewed “red” and “yellow” measures—depending on the severity of outbreaks – would include obligatory wearing of face masks outdoors, curbs on sporting facilities and cultural venues, and restrictions for those using public transportation as well as limiting the number of people who will be able to attend weddings, funerals and other events. The new restrictions are due to come into effect on Saturday in 19 of the worst affected counties. The announcement came as the country reported a record single-day rise in coronavirus cases for the fifth time since the middle of last week.

Poland’s recently re-elected President Andrzej Duda was sworn into his second term in office before both houses of parliament on Thursday. Duda, a conservative, delivered a wide-ranging address to parliamentarians, setting out his vision of the next five years.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo will visit Poland on August 15th, officials have announced. The US ambassador to Poland, Georgette Mosbacher, said in a Twitter post that Pompeo would visit Warsaw to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Poland’s victory over the Russian Bolsheviks in the 1920 Battle of Warsaw.
– His visit is yet another sign of the deep and enduring partnership between our two countries – Mosbacher added. While in Europe next week, Mike Pompeo is also expected to visit the Czech Republic, Slovenia and Austria.

And finally, after a three-month suspension of regular domestic and international flights caused by the coronavirus epidemic, Gdańsk airport is rebuilding its network of connections.
According to website trojmiasto.pl, 154,000 passengers were handled in July, 136,000 more than in June. Most passengers are flying to Southern Europe and the top three destinations are London, Oslo and Warsaw. The current network includes a total of 84 connections from Gdańsk to 20 countries. Even though the airline is ready for flights, it is still not possible to travel by plane to Sweden. The government ban was extended until August 11th.
