Former Polish transport minister Sławomir Nowak has been charged with taking bribes and money laundering, prosecutors cited by news outlets said on Monday.
Nowak, who served as transport minister from 2011 to 2013 in Poland’s former coalition government led by the centrist Civic Platform party, has been charged with accepting PLN 6.5 million in bribes and soliciting a further PLN 4.5 million according to prosecutors. Nowak is charged on 17 counts, including money laundering and heading a six-person criminal group. Nowak was detained in July last year by Poland’s Central Anti-Corruption Bureau in a joint probe with Ukrainian investigators on suspicion of multiple white-collar crimes while he worked in Ukraine.

Poland’s central bank chief has dismissed short-term concerns over inflation, even as other central banks in the region have begun to raise interest rates to combat a surge in prices, the Financial Times has reported. He also said that there was „no sign” of property bubbles fuelled by low interest rates, adding that Poland’s banks were well-capitalized and that the real estate market was not overheating. Glapiński argued the data was not currently “worrying,” saying that inflation was partly driven by transient and external factors such as base effects, and fuel prices.

And finally, a 21 year old Warsaw man has been apprehended after an armed robbery in Gdańsk Przeróbka at the end of June.
During the incident, the man held up a grocery store at knife point, making off with several thousand zloty in cash. Gdańsk police secured footage of the incident and identified the perpetrator. He was tracked down to the beach in Gdańsk Jelitkowo where he was apprehended. The man from Warsaw had been living at a camp-site in the area. He faces up to 12 years in prison if convicted.

Three-quarters of pupils rounding off their school education in Poland passed their final exams this year, which were held amid a coronavirus epidemic, officials said on Monday.
The head of Poland’s Central Examination Commission said the pass rate – 74.5 percent – was not significantly different from years in which pupils attended on-site classes, rather than the online lessons introduced as a measure to stop the spread of COVID-19. The matura school-leaving tests are a rite of passage that determines Polish teenagers’ future to a large degree.
