A Polish deputy justice minister criticized the European Commission yesterday for seeking to extend its powers beyond EU treaties, after Brussels stepped up an infringement procedure against Poland.
Earlier in the day, the European Commission said it was adopting the second step in an infringement procedure against Poland for so-called „violations of EU law by the Constitutional Tribunal”.
Brussels launched the infringement procedure last December, giving Poland two months to reply to its letter of formal notice. Poland replied in time but the response did not address the Commission’s concerns, Brussels said.
According to the Polish constitution, Polish authorities are bound by the rulings of the Constitutional Tribunal, which are universally valid in the country.

Polish traffic police have been out in force this week in a bid to crack down on speeders and improve road safety.
Police say the main cause of fatal road accidents caused by drivers in Poland is motorists failing to adapt their speed to traffic conditions. A total of 2,233 people were killed and 26,413 injured in 22,802 accidents on Polish roads last year, according to preliminary police figures released earlier this year.
At the start of 2022, stricter traffic rules took effect in the country with tougher fines for drivers as part of efforts to improve road safety.

Polish prosecutors have launched an investigation after a man drowned in the Baltic sea in a failed rescue attempt of a person in trouble in the water.
The man drowned on Wednesday near the Baltic resort of Jantar after trying to rescue a swimmer in trouble. The deceased was one of four bystanders who attempted to comb the sea near the Jantar beach for a person who was reportedly drowning.
The 32-year-old man was taken by helicopter to a hospital, where he subsequently died on Wednesday night. Police said someone may have misled the four beach-goers by falsely claiming that a person needed help in the water.

Police in Gdańsk are searching for a woman who went missing more than a week ago with her 5 year old son.
45-year-old Marzena Denysiuk and her 5-year-old son Igor Denysiuk were last seen on July 7th leaving an apartment on Chłopska Street in Gdańsk Przymorze district. She has not been seen or heard from since.
The missing woman is 160 cm tall, with a slim figure, shoulder length red hair and dark eyes. She was probably dressed in a light knee-length coat, dark pants, sports shoes, and a black shoulder bag. Igor is 120 cm tall, slim and with fair hair.
