Polish president Andrzej Duda has travelled to New York overnight to attend today’s opening of the 77th session of the United Nations General Assembly.
Yesterday the president was at the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II in London, where he also had a brief meeting with the new UK prime minister Liz Truss on Sunday.
At the UN, Duda is due to speak in the general debate later today, and in the evening, together with his wife, he will attend the welcome reception for heads of state hosted by US president Joe Biden and the First Lady Jill Biden.
Duda’s visit will last three days, with the president also scheduled to meet with Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro, the UN secretary general Antonio Guterres, and the president of the World Bank David Malpass.

A search was begun yesterday afternoon for a man who fell overboard from a ferry leaving Gdynia port.
The incident happened shortly after the Stena Spirit vessel departed for the Swedish port of Karlskrona.
The head of the Maritime Search and Rescue Service, Wojciech Paczkowski, said that the area of Gdańsk bay from Reda to the port of Gdynia was being searched, with the assistance of Border Guards and a rescue helicopter.
There was no indication of what might have caused the man, who is reported to be a cook in the ship’s crew, to fall overboard.

Lechia Gdańsk football team will start training with its new coach today.
Marcin Kaczamarek’s appointment was announced yesterday, bringing him back to the club after a 16-year break. The 48-year-old previously coached the white and greens between 2004 and 2006, when they advanced from the third to the second division under his leadership.
Lechia’s previous full-time coach, Tomasz Kaczmarek—who’s no relation to the new man—was released at the end of August, following a poor league performance by the team. The club’s president, Paweł Żelem, said Marcin Kaczmarek was chosen because he knows the club and league well, and has experience with ambitious challenges.

Thousands of Polish soldiers are taking part in live fire exercises in the east of the country, together with colleagues from the United States and United Kingdom.
The „Bear 22” manoeuvres are aimed at gaining certification for the 19th Mechanised Brigade based at Lublin and the 18th Logistics Regiment from Łomża to fight at allied combat readiness standards. Both units were established three years ago.
The exercises are focused on the training ground at Nowa Dęba, and involve tanks from Poland, the US and the UK. The drills will continue until Friday this week.

A Wizz Air flight carrying around 250 people from Georgia to Gdańsk landed with none of the passengers’ luggage on board.
The travellers received the news from their pilot as they disembarked from the plane, which was more than two hours late. Wizz Air said in a statement that the bags had not been loaded onto the plane at Kutaisi airport in Georgia „for operational reasons”, and said they sincerely apologised for the inconvenience.
