South Korean President Yoon Sook Yeo made a surprise visit to Ukraine yesterday after meeting with Polish President Andrzej Duda in Warsaw last week.

During his visit to Kyiv, President Yoon Sook Yeo promised South Korea would increase humanitarian aid and non-lethal military support, such as helmets and bulletproof vests, for Ukraine’s reconstruction and defense.

In a press conference on Saturday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky thanked Yoon for South Korea’s “initiatives to provide financial, technical and humanitarian assistance to Ukraine” and for the transfer of life-saving vehicles and demining equipment.

Last Thursday, President Yoon and his wife, Kim Keon Hee, met with President Duda in Poland to discuss potential cooperation on nuclear energy, defense, and infrastructure development.

As a result of the meeting, three cooperation agreements were signed between Poland and the Republic of Korea regarding trade and investment promotion, transport infrastructure development, and reconstruction in Ukraine.

Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki visited Pomerania over the weekend to tour the US military base and anti-missile shield in Redzikowo.

During his speech at the US Naval Support Unit on Saturday, Morawiecki stressed that “it is as vital to defend Polish skies as it is to defend Polish land” amid threats such as Russia’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine.
Morawiecki went on to praise the “unprecedented…modernization of the Polish army and its integration within the entire NATO defense system.” The investment “makes Poland safer today than ever before.”

According to Morawiecki, the missile defense base at Redzikowo, the final part of the US missile defense shield over Europe, is expected to be completed by the end of this year and achieve full operational readiness by 2024.

A scorching heatwave is underway across Europe, with temperatures in Poland set to top thirty (30) degrees Celsius (80°F) today and tomorrow.

Poland’s Government Security Centre (RCB) issued heatwave guidance for the public via text messages and tweets yesterday, advising residents to “avoid physical exertion, stay home if possible, wear a hat, and apply UV filter cream.”

Citizens were also urged to “not leave children and animals in the car, avoid drinking alcohol as it dehydrates the body, close and cover the windows during the day, and wear lightweight and airy clothing.”

The government warned that the heat was most intense between 15:00 and 18:00 and that “it is particularly dangerous to children and seniors” and can also be dangerous for pets.
Anyone experiencing symptoms of heatstroke, such as headache, nausea, dizziness, and extremely elevated body temperature, should call the 112 emergency helpline.

Updated weather details and warnings can be found on the Institute of Meteorology (IMGW) website.

Poland’s Chief Sanitary Inspectorate (GIS) is promoting an updated database and features on its website and app to help residents find the perfect swimming area to cool down.

The app and GIS website feature an interactive map of 685 guarded bathing areas across Poland. Users can click on a specific beach and get up-to-date information on if the water is safe for bathing, along with a description of the bathing area, including the length of the shoreline and a list of attractions for children.

GIS officials are encouraging residents to use the database when deciding on a bathing area, as residents “can swim there safely due to the presence of a lifeguard” and will avoid “any surprises at the bottom of the reservoir.”

According to information from the GIS website, most of the 685 recommended bathing areas in Poland were open and available as of this morning, including all sites in Pomerania.
