The Polish foreign ministry protested yesterday against the removal of public memorials in Russia commemorating Poles murdered by the Soviet-era secret police during World War II. The foreign ministry’s comments came after reports that two plaques commemorating the victims of the 1940 Katyn Massacre of Poles had been removed from the NKVD’s former regional headquarters in the town of Tver, 180 km north-west of Moscow.
In a statement in Polish on its website, published on the day that marked the 75th anniversary of the end of the war in Europe, the foreign ministry in Warsaw said it protested against practices aiming to “blur memories about the era of terror in Russia”.

The British and US ambassadors in Warsaw have paid tribute to Polish soldiers who fought in World War II on the 75th anniversary of the end of the war in Europe.
Yesterday marked 75 years since VE Day, or Victory in Europe Day, when the Allies celebrated Nazi Germany’s surrender of its armed forces and the end of World War II in 1945. The British embassy in Warsaw on Friday displayed the Polish flag next to the Union Jack.
The British ambassador to Poland tweeted of the “symbol of that special shared history, that special relationship”. The US ambassador to Poland also honoured Poland’s World War II heroes in a Twitter message adding that “America shall remain forever grateful to them, and their sacrifice for freedom”.

A small village in Poland is celebrating after it recorded the first male birth in a decade.
The tiny village of Miejsce Odrzańskie in Southern Poland with a population of just 300 made headlines around the world last year after it emerged that no boys had been born there in the last 10 years.
This week however, the deadlock was finally broken after a lucky resident gave birth to a baby boy. Such was the interest in the story last year that the local mayor had even offered a reward to the first couple to have son.
The delighted mayor said, “This is wonderful news, especially at this time when we are all dealing with the coronavirus pandemic.Every birth is special, but this one offers all of us hope for the future”.

Traffic levels in the Trójmiasto are returning to pre-coronavirus levels.
According to an article in trojmiasto.pl, traffic surveys have shown that levels are now back at 70% of what they were at before the coronavirus pandemic lockdown started.
The deputy director of Roads and Greenery in Gdańsk said that all kinds of traffic had been affected during the lock-down including road, rail and bicycle traffic and at the height of the lock-down, levels had been up to 70% lower than normal.
