Radio Gdansk News in English: Pomerania considered for Poland’s first nuclear power plant

Poland’s first nuclear power station could be built in Pomerania, that’s according to new government documents seen by a Polish news site.
According to „Business Insider Polska”, four locations for the plant are under consideration, two of which are in Pomerania.

The proposed sites in Lubiatowo-Kopalino and Żarnowiec are both located close to the Baltic coast and are about 48 km (30 miles) north-west of Tricity. Two other sites in the Greater Poland and Łódź provinces are also under consideration.

Atomic energy has long been viewed as a possible solution to Poland’s dependence on coal. The government this week affirmed plans to build the country’s first reactor within the next two decades as part of its Energy Strategy 2040.

The UK is in mourning this week after a beloved army veteran who raised millions for the country’s health service died after testing positive for Covid-19.

Captain Sir Tom Moore, a veteran of the Second World War, made international headlines last year when he set out to raise £1000 (5000 PLN) for the UK’s National Health Service by walking lengths of his garden.

Public support flooded in and Captain Tom had soon surpassed his £1000 goal to raise well over £30 million (150 million PLN).

The 100-year old quickly became a national hero during the pandemic and went on to be promoted to Honorary Colonel by the British Army and made a knight by the Queen. He even achieved No. 1 hit when he joined singer Michael Ball in a rendition of „You’ll Never Walk Alone”.

He died on Tuesday after being admitted to hospital in Bedford, north of London. Tributes have poured in and millions across the UK joined a national clap yesterday evening in honour of the veteran.

Scientists in the UK say even a single dose of the AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine appears to be effective at dramatically slowing the spread of the virus.

In a paper submitted this week to the Lancet Journal, an international team of scientists and experts led by the University of Oxford claim one dose of the drug can reduce transmission of the virus by up to 67%. If accurate, the findings, which are currently under peer review, offer hope that the spread of Covid-19 could be cut quickly with mass vaccinations.

Two doses of the vaccine are needed for full immunity to kick in, but the researchers also say they found even a single dose could offer up to 76% protection from the disease.

Gdansk’s trams are getting a fresh lick of paint. The new livery keeps the traditional colours of red and off-white, but with a modernised pattern for the older trams and slightly brighter shades.

Speaking to Gdansk.pl, Sebastian Zomkowski, directory of Gdansk public transport authority (ZTM), said the new design would bring „lightness and elegance” and help to „brighten” up the old trams.

Mr Zomkowski added that the new livery would be phased in gradually and would not increase costs.
