The US Senate has acquitted former President Donald Trump on charges of inciting his supporters to violence culminating in the January 6 attack on the US Capitol.
House prosecutors in Trump’s historic second impeachment appealed to their Senate colleagues using personal testimony and visceral footage of the capitol siege, much of it posted on social media by those accused of perpetrating the riot. While a majority of Senators (57) voted in favor of the proceedings, the effort fell short of the required two-thirds majority needed for conviction.
Despite voting against conviction, former Senate majority leader Mitch McConnell delivered a harsh rebuke of the former President’s actions, calling him “practically and morally responsible” for the insurrection. The senior Republican leader went on to warn that Trump could still be open to criminal prosecution, as he “is still liable for everything he did while he [was] in office.”
Thousands of Poles spent the weekend at tourist resorts after hotels and ski slopes were allowed to reopen last Friday amid signs of a let-up in the spread of COVID-19.
Police in Zakopane reported their busiest night in months, with officers called out to dozens of incidents at hotels and boarding houses, including brawls, street fights, and even an improvised dance in the resort’s iconic Krupówki street.
The current easing of coronavirus restrictions will be reassessed at the end of the month. While cinemas and cultural centers are now open, gyms, restaurants, and aqua parks will remain closed. Students above the third grade will also continue their studies remotely until the end of the month.
Parents are being reminded to check recruitment dates for preschools and kindergartens in Gdańsk in preparation for next year’s enrollment process.
Online enrollment officially begins March 1, but parents have until February 26 to declare their intent to continue pre-school or kindergarten education at their current institution. The completed and signed card must be submitted to school directors before enrollment.
Due to the pandemic, there will be no open days in Gdańsk primary schools, and parents or guardians of six-year-olds are encouraged to visit the relevant school website. Online recruitment for kindergarten and first grade will open Monday, March 1, at 12.00 noon.
The next round of vaccine registration for teachers opened at 8:00 Monday morning and will run until Friday evening.
Registration for inoculations using Oxford’s AstraZeneca vaccine will be open until February 18 for additional groups of teachers, including teachers up to 65 years of age and teachers in academia. Teachers must register using the appropriate online platform.
There are two separate registration systems: teachers in schools, kindergartens, and educational institutions should use the Educational Information System (Systemu Informacji Oświatowej), while academic teachers and others conducting classes at universities should use the POL-on system (System Informacji o Nauce i Szkolnictwie Wyższym).
Polish women dominated at the Nordic Junior World Ski Championships in Finland over the weekend, bringing home two golds and a bronze.
Izabela Marcisz won gold in the women’s 10 km cross-country skiing freestyle yesterday, adding to the gold and bronze medals won earlier by teammates Monika Skinder and Karolina Kaleta in the women’s cross-country skiing sprint classic.
Hundreds of young athletes took part in the event in Finland despite the coronavirus pandemic. The annual Nordic event features competitions in cross-country skiing, ski jumping, and nordic combined events (the latter being a combination sport consisting of both cross-country and ski jumping).
