Radio Gdansk News in English: Poland vs. Spain

After a disappointing start to EURO 2020 in Monday’s match against Slovakia, the Polish national team is hoping to defy the odds and triumph against Spain tonight.

Many commentators predict the Poles will find the Spaniards, currently ranked No. 6 in the world and the winners of the 2010 World Cup, a tougher prospect than 36th-ranked Slovakia.

In an interview earlier this week, Zbigniew Boniek, head of the Polish Football Association (PZPN), told reporters that the Polish team was merely „missing some luck.”

The Poles aren’t the only ones looking for some luck today, as 37th-ranked Hungary faces off against No.2- ranked France at 15:00, followed by Portugal vs. Germany in Munich at 18:00.

Tune in to our special program „Radio Gdańsk Z Boisk i Stadionów” from 18:05 to 20:00 for some expert insights into today’s matchup, or join us during the match starting at 21:00 for live commentary.

Polish lawmakers met behind closed doors this week to be briefed on a recent spate of cyberattacks reportedly originating from Russia.

In a statement yesterday, the head of Poland’s ruling conservative party, Jarosław Kaczyński,
claimed that top Polish officials, ministers, and MPs from various political parties had been targeted by a cyberattack launched from Russian territory. According to Kaczyński, who currently serves as a deputy prime minister and chairs a national security committee, the main goal was „to attack Polish society and destabilize our country.”

Officials said earlier this month that investigators were probing a hacker attack on the social media and email accounts of the prime minister’s top aide, Michał Dworczyk, amid suspicions that Russia was behind the incident. Dworczyk said he considered the cyberattack to be a part of a wider „disinformation campaign” against Poland.

The German government recently announced plans for a new monument in Berlin, highlighting the destruction Poland experienced at the hands of Nazi Germany in World War II.

Speaking during his recent visit to Warsaw, German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier described the proposed monument as „a place that will show to modern generations the enormity of suffering and unimaginable destruction that Poland experienced during the war.”

The announcement and the visit of the German president coincided with the 30th anniversary of the Polish-German Treaty of Good Neighbourship and Friendly Cooperation. Signed on June 17, 1991, the landmark agreement laid the foundations for Polish-German reconciliation following the atrocities of WWII.
