New Canal for Maritime Traffic from Elblag and the Vistula Lagoon The Polish President Andrzej Duda and the Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki are visiting northern Poland today.
They will be visiting the Vistula Lagoon near Elblag into which there is a canal being cut to make way for maritime traffic between the Baltic and the Lagoon.
The move was initially criticised by opposition politicians however the government says that it will make Poland less dependent on Russia. Currently any traffic wishing to travel in our out of the Lagoon or the port of Elblag has to obtain permission from Russia as the only exit is through Russian territorial waters.
Local environment groups were worried about wildlife and eco hazards however, local business are welcoming the expansion saying it will bring trade and tourism to this area of exceptional natural beauty.

Brexit: EU postpones ban on British meat sales in NI
The European Union (EU) has agreed to a three-month delay to a ban on some meat products from Great Britain being sold in Northern Ireland.
The proposed ban on items like fresh sausages was a consequence of the Northern Ireland Protocol, a Brexit deal between the UK and EU in 2019.
The EU and UK agreed to extend a so-called grace period – the time before the ban comes into effect.
The new arrangement means the meat ban will be postponed until 30 September.
The EU’s chief Brexit negotiator, European Commission Vice-President Maroš Šefčovič said the EU was „accommodating” the UK’s request to extend the grace period but was „not issuing a blank cheque”.
„This solution is of a temporary nature, in which strong conditions are attached,” he added.

From today, July 1st 2021, manufacturers will have to make spares available to consumers in the UK, with the aim of extending the lifespan of products by up to 10 years, it said.
Higher energy standards this year will also knock an average of £75 per year off energy bills, the government said.

The World’s rarest amber containing 40-million-year-old predatory insects unveiled
Three of the world’s rarest and best preserved examples of amber containing fauna from 40 million years ago, including a newly discovered species of a Geko and flying insect have been unveiled at the Museum of Gdańsk.
The three pieces are known as ‘inclusions’ due to the fossilised animal life encased in the translucent amber tree resin.
The rare pieces will now form part of a permanent exhibit at the new multimedia Museum of Amber, which is set to reopen on the 24th of July at the Great Mill in Gdańsk after a renovation and change of location.
