A group of US senators have urged Polish President Andrzej Duda to veto a planned law on restitution claims in his country.
Last month, Poland’s lower house of parliament passed a bill introducing a statute of limitations on claims for the restitution of property, drawing an angry response from Israeli Foreign Minister who labelled it a “disgrace.” The legislation would implement a 2015 ruling by Poland’s Constitutional Tribunal that there should be a deadline after which faulty administrative decisions can no longer be challenged. Critics say the move could make it more difficult for Jews to recover property seized by Poland’s Nazi German occupiers in World War II. The planned law is set to be voted in the upper house of Poland’s parliament later this week.

Poland’s health ministry has warned that the number of COVID-19 infections in the country could rise in the coming weeks as the Delta variant of the coronavirus begins to spread more quickly.
After weeks of low infection rates, Poland faces growing numbers of new coronavirus cases as the Delta variant gains ground, the health ministry said. Its spokesman Wojciech Andrusiewicz has told reporters that the Delta variant is becoming more prevalent and at present accounts for 46 percent of infections in Poland. The country has seen daily infection rates below 100 per day since July 7th.

The government has approved a set of changes to Poland’s rules of the road that would allow for up to a tenfold increase in maximum fines for various traffic offences.
The new rules would also toughen punishments for drunk driving. “In case of drunk driving your car may be confiscated,” said Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki. He added that „the fines will be more severe to encourage safer and more careful driving.” In a statement, Morawiecki told reports „An ordinary walk to school or a family hike should not be fraught with risks to our lives”.

People passing by could not believe their eyes yesterday outside a block of flats in Gdańsk Przymorze as hundreds of thousands of Polish zloty in banknotes rained down from the sky.
As police were called, the source of the notes turned out to be a disgruntled spouse who after an argument with her husband threw almost 200,000 PLN of banknotes from the balcony of their 6th floor apartment. During the subsequent search of the area, the police collected and secured most of the money, and then handed it over to the owner, a 53-year-old man from Gdańsk. The man, in the presence of the police, opened an account in the bank and paid the entire sum there. It’s not known whether the man filed charges against his wife.
