Radio Gdansk News in English: Memorial march commemorates Jews deported from Warsaw ghetto

A March of Remembrance was held in the Polish capital on yesterday to mark 79 years since the Germans began deporting Jews from the World War II-era Warsaw Ghetto.
On July 22, 1942, the Germans began deporting Jews from the ghetto to the Treblinka death camp. For more than two months, from 5,000 to 7,000 Jews were transported every day by train from Warsaw’s Umschlagplatz to Treblinka, where they were exterminated. Almost 300,000 Jews perished at the time. This year’s March of Remembrance, the 10th event of its kind, was dedicated to wartime teachers who accompanied their students until the last moments before the deportations.

The Polish and Ukrainian foreign ministers have called on the United States and Germany to address what they described as a security crisis in their region after Washington and Berlin announced a deal over Russia’s controversial Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline.

The deal announced by the United States and Germany on Wednesday allows the completion of the disputed pipeline vehemently opposed by Poland and Ukraine without either Germany or Russia facing new US sanctions. In a joint statement released on Wednesday evening, the ministers said that the decision to build Nord Stream 2, announced in 2015 just „months after Russia’s invasion and illegal annexation of Ukrainian territory,” created a „security, credibility and political crisis” in Europe.

Polish lawmakers have rejected a bid to oust the country’s education minister amid a bitter dispute over school curricula and accusations of cultural indoctrination.

The bid had little chance of succeeding because the country’s governing conservatives hold a comfortable majority in parliament. During the session, Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki defended the minister saying „We will defend the right of our children to be educated without leftist indoctrination”.

Gdynia has introduced a mobile vaccination unit on board a bus that will visit different parts of the city each day.

A spokesman for the city council stated that traditional vaccination points functioned well for two months during which time nearly 50,000 residents used them. He noted that the stationary formula, however, „has run out a bit”, so only one of the points will be maintained at the University Center of Maritime and Tropical Medicine, while the new „Szczepibus” will be a boost for people who find it difficult to get vaccinated. Vaccinations on the bus will be performed without prior registration.
