Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki was in Trójmiasto earlier this week to announce plans for the expansion of the port of Gdańsk.
In his remarks on Monday, Morawiecki described the development as “a huge opportunity for Poland” to extend its logistical and transport networks and potentially capture additional revenue from customs duties.
Morawiecki’s announcement comes as the DCT Gdańsk company pursues plans to build a new PLN 2 billion (EUR 440m, USD 500m) terminal, dubbed Baltic Hub 3, in the waters of the Bay of Gdańsk.
According to Paweł Borys, head of the Polish Development Fund (PFR), the new terminal would boost the port’s trans-shipment capacity by a third, and the harbor would become “fit to receive the biggest seafaring ships.”
The planned expansion is in line with Gdańsk’s stated ambition to be the key port in the Baltic Sea and one of the top-10 harbors in Europe.

Poland’s top striker Robert Lewandowski has been named Footballer of the Year in Germany for the second time in a row.
Lewandowski, who plays for German champions Bayern Munich, received 356 of the 563 votes cast by German sports journalists, a resounding victory over second-placed Thomas Müller (41 votes) and third-placed Erling Haaland (38).
The title of Footballer of the Year (Fußballer des Jahres) is awarded every year by leading German sports magazine Kicker.
The Polish star striker last season bagged 41 goals in the German Bundesliga, thus breaking a long-standing league record by former Bayern great Gerd Müller.

Polish football champions Legia Warsaw have moved on to the third round of UEFA Champions League qualifiers after eliminating Estonian side Flora Tallinn.
Legia on Tuesday beat the Estonian team 1-0 away in the second leg of their Champions League round one qualifier.
The Polish champions will now face Dinamo Zagreb of Croatia; to qualify for the Champions League group stage, Legia needs to eliminate Dinamo Zagreb and one additional opponent.
The first of two matches between Dinamo and Legia is scheduled for August 4.

Polish director Jan P. Matuszyński’s “Leave No Traces” has been included in the line-up of 21 films set to compete for the Golden Lion award at the International Film Festival in Venice.
The event, one of the world’s most prestigious cinema festivals, is scheduled to take place from September 1 to 11.
Leave No Traces is based on the real-life story of a young man who witnesses the fatal beating of his friend by the police in the early 1980s, during martial law imposed by the communist regime to crush the Solidarity movement.
Film producers Leszek Bodzak and Aneta Hickinbotham have said they are happy that, thanks to the film’s premiere in Venice, the world will learn about an important fragment of Polish history—the case of Grzegorz Przemyk, a high school student beaten to death by police.
“To have my film screened at what is one of the key places on the world film map is a source of genuine pride and honor for me,” Matuszyński said after the festival’s selection panel announced its decision. “I couldn’t think of a better venue to bring my film to an audience,” he added.
The film is set to premiere in Poland sometime in early autumn.
