There has been heavy fighting in Kyiv overnight and into today as Russian forces battle with the Ukrainian army and armed civilians in the country’s capital.

The Ukrainian president has urged people to fight against the Russian invaders and remains at a secret location in the capital despite US offers to evacuate him. Yesterday Russian military units attempted to destroy one of the city’s thermal power stations and there has been intense resistance from the Ukrainian side. Three million people live in Kyiv. The news comes as more than 50,000 Ukrainians have fled the country in the last 48 hours with the majority heading to Poland and Moldova.

Poland has said it will provide help and support to all Ukrainians who come to the country to escape the war in Ukraine. Speaking at a news conference a top aide to the Polish president added that even people without passports will be able to cross into Poland and find refuge.

On Friday, queues of up to 6km were reported at the border between Ukraine and Poland of people trying to cross into Poland. Officials say that Poland has so far set up nine reception centres for people fleeing Ukraine due to the Russian invasion of the country

The head of Poland’s National Security Bureau has said that NATO will not send in any troops to Ukraine as things stand.

During an interview with Radio Zet he said that the alliance was monitoring the situation constantly, but that there was no chance that troops, including Polish troops would be sent into Ukraine. The words of US President Joe Biden were also recalled, who said on Thursday that US troops will not take part in the war unless Russia enters NATO territory.
