The Russian war against Ukraine is entering its 8th day today with heavy Russian bombardments of a number of strategic cities in the country including the capital Kyiv.

The port city of Mariupol has seen particularly devastating shelling and is seen as a key prize for the Russians, allowing them join up their forces in the south and east of the country. Overnight, strong explosions have rocked the capital Kyiv. Russia has also seized control of the key southern port city of Kherson.

Meanwhile the United Nations General Assembly has voted in favour of a resolution condemning the Russian invasion of Ukraine. An investigation into possible war crimes in Ukraine has also been launched by the International Criminal Court in The Hague.

Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki on Wednesday reiterated his call for the European Union to ban imports of coal from Russia amid Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine.

Speaking to reporters after a meeting with European Council head Charles Michel at Jasionka in south-eastern Poland, Morawiecki said his country was ready to stop importing Russian coal immediately and buy more coal from Australia instead.

In the first half of last year, Poland imported 6.2 million tonnes of coal, including 4 million tonnes from Russia and 1.15 million tonnes from Australia. In other news, the Prime Minister’s Office also said in a tweet at midday on Wednesday that a total of 474,510 refugees „have crossed the Polish border since the beginning of Russia’s aggression against Ukraine.”

Poland’s PM has called for unity in the country as he convened a meeting of the country’s National Security Council.

During the meeting the president also vetoed a disputed amendment to the Educational Law that would have strengthened the role of school superintendents and changed the rules governing the functioning of non-governmental organizations in schools as a gesture of unity. He added that the country needs to strengthen the army, calling for the purchase of new and modern weapons for the army „so that they can perform their task of defending the homeland in the best possible way, should the necessity arise”. He recalled the saying: „You want peace, get ready for war.”

Gdańsk and other cities around Pomerania are continuing in their efforts to support the people of Ukraine and refugees entering the country.

The city is gearing up to accept an influx of women with children, children from orphanages and foster care who are fleeing Ukraine. Around 260 children from 6 Ukrainian orphanages are due to arrive in Pomerania and will be accommodated in centres around the region and Gdańsk has made places available for 130 children from Ukrainian orphanages. The Gdańsk Foundation has raised over PLN 1.5 million in fund-raising activities.
