Poland is set to lift its requirement for people to wear masks in enclosed public spaces from Monday.

The decision was announced by the Polish Health Minister earlier in the week. According to the figures provided by the World Health Organisation (WHO), a total of 5,915,888 cases of Coronavirus infection have been registered in Poland since the beginning of the pandemic, while a total of 114,480 people have lost their lives as a result of the virus, during the same period. In addition, the same source shows that in the last seven days, a total of 64,741 people have tested positive for the virus, while a total of 707 people have died.

The Polish and US presidents are set to meet for talks in Warsaw on today to discuss Russia’s war in Ukraine and the West’s response to what many say is the worst security crisis in Europe since World War II.

US President Joe Biden arrived in Rzeszów Airport in the south-east of Poland yesterday afternoon for a busy two-day trip to discuss the international community’s response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the humanitarian crisis the war has created. His arrival marked the 14th time a US president has visited Poland. The US leader then left the airport to visit American troops from the 82nd Airborne Division stationed in Rzeszów.

From today, refugees from Ukraine will be able to submit applications for the 500-plus benefit written in their own language.

Therefore, Pomeranian offices of the Social Insurance Institution will be open this weekend. The regional ZUS spokesman of the Pomeranian Voivodeship said that thanks to the Act on assistance to Ukrainian citizens in connection with an armed conflict in the territory of that country, refugees will gain access to support. They will be able to apply for the following benefits: 500 plus, Rodzinny Kapitał Opiekuńczy and Dobry Start, as well as for a nursery voucher. Support will be granted for the period of stay with children in Poland.

A group of homeless people from Gdańsk have helped to raise money for refugees from Ukraine.

During the week, the homeless from the Shelter of the Brother Albert’s House in Gdańsk collected over 1300 PLN and a large carton of sweets for Ukrainian children studying at the Primary School No. 16 in the city. The director of the school said she was overwhelmed with emotion when she learnt of the donation saying, „I cried. It is unbelievable that people who do not have themselves can share and give to others. Faith in humanity is returning”.
