EU leaders commemorate anniversary of Holodomor in Ukraine
The prime ministers of Poland, Lithuania, and Ukraine met in Kyiv yesterday to commemorate the 90th anniversary of the Holodomor and discuss mutual support against Russian aggression.
The three countries discussed continuing economic, humanitarian, and military aid as part of a three-way initiative known as the Lublin Triangle. The initiative aims to enhance the three countries’ political, economic, and social ties while also helping Ukraine regain its territorial integrity and bring that country closer to the European Union and NATO.
The leaders also paid homage to those who died during the Holodomor or “death by starvation” – a devastating famine from 1932-1933 thought to be intentionally engineered by Stalin as a means of subduing the local population.
During a press briefing on Saturday, Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki described communist Russia’s history of “committing genocide” in Ukraine, detailing how the artificially-induced famine killed millions of Ukrainians and some 100,000 Poles living in Ukraine at the time.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky later pointed to the historical parallels between Russia’s current attacks on civilian infrastructure in Ukraine and the history of the Holodomor, describing in a post on Telegram how “once they wanted to destroy us with hunger, now – with darkness and cold,”
Despite the grim nature of both past and present reality, Zelensky ended the post on an optimistic note, reminding Ukrainians that “we cannot be broken.”

Morawiecki in Kyiv to support “Grain from Ukraine” summit
Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki was in Kyiv over the weekend as part of the “Grain from Ukraine” summit alongside the prime ministers of Belgium and Lithuania and the president of Hungary.
The “Grain from Ukraine: bravery feeds the planet” initiative aims to export grain to countries most vulnerable to famine and drought as part of a UN-brokered deal with Russia to allow Ukrainian grain shipments through the Black Sea.
Kyiv has reportedly raised nearly $150 million from more than 20 countries and the European Union to export grain to countries in the MENA region, including Ethiopia, Sudan, South Sudan, Somalia, and Yemen.
The presidents of Germany and France and the head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, also delivered speeches to conference participants via video.
In his remarks, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky pointed to the “Grain from Ukraine” initiative as a way to show that global food security is “not just empty words” for Kyiv and partners like Poland but “one of the biggest contributions to global stability – a real and very necessary step.”

Poland triumphs over Saudi Arabia at World Cup
Poland is ranked first in Group C of the World Cup after a triumphant 2-0 win against Saudi Arabia yesterday in Qatar.
Midfielder Piotr Zieliński, goalkeeper Wojciech Szczęsny, and team captain Robert Lewandowski were the heroes of the match, with Lewandowski weeping “tears of joy” after scoring his first-ever World Cup goal in the 82-minute mark of the match.
Argentina, which defeated Mexico 2-0 last night, is ranked second in Group C with 3 points, behind Poland with 4 points. Saudi Arabia also has 3 points, and Mexico is in last palace with only 1 point. The top two teams will advance to the knockout stage next weekend.
Defending world champions France were the first team to qualify for the knockout stage of the tournament after their 2-1 victory yesterday against Denmark. Star striker Kylian Mbappe scored both goals in Saturday’s match and remains the lead scorer in this year’s World Cup.
Australia also managed to beat Tunisia 1-0 yesterday and, thanks to Denmark’s loss to France, are now in second place in Group D. The Aussies will face the Danes later in the week for a chance to advance beyond the group stage, something they’ve only accomplished once before.
The Polish team is set to face Argentina on Wednesday, November 30, at 20:00 Warsaw time (CET), with Mexico and Saudi Arabia scheduled to play at the same time.
