NATO Condemns Russia’s Withdrawal from CFE Treaty

NATO allies have condemned Russia’s decision to withdraw from the landmark Conventional Forces of Europe (CFE) treaty. An official statement was made on the NATO account on the “X” platform: “Allies condemn Russia’s decision to withdraw from the Treaty on Conventional Armed Forces in Europe (CFE), and its war of aggression against Ukraine which is contrary to the Treaty’s objectives,” It added “Therefore, as a consequence, Allied States Parties intend to suspend the operation of the CFE Treaty for as long as necessary, in accordance with their rights under international law,”

The Polish Foreign Ministry made a similar statement: “Poland shall take formal steps to suspend the CFE Treaty indefinitely and in its entirety, in respect to all of its provisions.” Since Russia’s withdrawal on Tuesday, NATO Allie’s have unanimously agreed to suspend the treaty, bypassing the provisions of the CFE treaty, namely limitations on Poland’s armed forces growth and development.
