PM Donald Tusk addressed the nation in a televised speech on Saturday, stating that „2023 will go down in history as a breakthrough year” referencing his coalition’s rise to power in the Polish government.

Tusk added: „I want to thank you all… the year was difficult and full of great emotions and fights, but also a civic awakening and a triumph of democracy.” Tusk then said that the most difficult task for his government would be „uniting a divided Poland” but promised to „not stop until it is done.” He concluded by wishing Poland a happy and safe 2024.

Russian diplomat Andrei Ordash made a public statement to the country’s news agency RIA Novosti concerning the recent incursion of an alleged Russian cruise missile in Polish airspace saying: „We will not give any explanations until we are presented with concrete evidence, because these accusations are unsubstantiated.”

Poland’s defense forces tracked an unknown object moving forty kilometers into Polish airspace from the direction of Ukraine, which remained in the airspace for about three minutes. Head of Poland’s armed forces Gen. Wiesław Kukuła stated that „everything indicates that it was a Russian missile,” and has launched a ground search in the Lubelskie province to find and dispose of any remains of the object.

Poland’s new Minister of Higher Education, Dariusz Wieczorek, has announced plans to provide PLN 150 million to universities for the development and renovation of student dorms. He stated: „The ministry wants to support the renovation of dormitories, because we know that due to their condition, 30% of spaces in these dormitories are unused.”

The funding will be divided between all eighty-seven universities in Poland that receive state subsidies for student housing. Each payment will be proportional to the space available at each university with a cap of PLN 4 million.

Olympic Champion Kamil Stoch finished 17th in the opening event of 2023/24 Four Hills Ski jumping tournament. Stoch is a three-time Olympic champion and was the victor of the Four Hills competition in 2017, 2018, and 2021.

The competition began Friday in Oberstdorf, Germany, and will continue until January 6th with another event in Germany and two more in Austria.
