The Polish police have started their annual campaign to maintain safety on Polish roads over the All Saints and All Souls day celebrations this weekend.
According to the Polish Associated Press, a total of 5,000 traffic police officers will be involved in maintaining road safety and optimum traffic flows and will be supported by officers from other departments, as well as by the Military Police.
A spokesman for the Police Main Headquarters said that there would be a keen focus on eliminating reckless driving and the condition of cars on Polish roads, as well as spot checks for drink driving.
During the 2018 campaign, a total of 425 road accidents happened, with 57 fatalities and 528 people injured. Police apprehended 1,299 drivers under the influence of alcohol.
An adviser to the European Court of Justice has this week submitted a non-binding opinion that Poland, Hungary and the Czech Republic failed to fulfil their legal obligations by refusing to take in refugees from states under pressure in the EU’s migration crisis.
Responding to the allegations, a spokesman for the Polish government stated that Poland had acted to ensure security for its citizens when it refused to accept any refugees as part of an EU programme to relocate migrants from the Middle East and Africa.
The Polish government spokesman further added that Warsaw’s decision was justified under the treaty governing the way the EU works, stating that, „The most important goal of government policy is to ensure security for our citizens.”
He added that thanks to the “tough attitude” of Poland and the Visegrad Group, a regional cooperation platform, “the entire European Union changed its approach to migration policy and moved away from the mandatory relocation of refugees.”
Poznan zoo is giving temporary refuge to a truck load of tigers after they were left stranded at the border with Belarus for days, according to BBC News.
The ten tigers which were being transported from Rome to a circus in Russia were prevented from entering Belarus as they lacked the correct documentation.
The zoo plans to quarantine the animals and hopes to send a few of them to Spain once they recover. Local authorities have begun an investigation into whether animal protection laws have been violated.
A Polish security firm has won the contract to protect the largest Saudi telecommunications operator from drone attacks.
Advanced Protection Systems from Gdynia won the contract with Saudi Telecom after beating off other international competitors. The company have already successfully protected sports events at Gdynia Stadium and are deployed at Stavanger and other Norwegian airports.
