Poland’s ruling conservatives are planning to hold presidential elections on June 28th, Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said on Thursday.
The election had been scheduled for May 10th, but failed to go ahead amid the coronavirus pandemic. The incumbent President Andrzej Duda, who is backed by Poland’s governing conservatives, is standing for another five-year term in office and is ahead in the polls. The opposition Civic Platform party recently choose Warsaw Mayor Rafał Trzaskowski as its new pick for head of state.
Polish deputies last week approved plans to conduct the presidential election via a mixed system of postal and traditional in-person voting.
President urges Poles to buy domestic dairy produce
President Andrzej Duda has called on Polish consumers to buy more domestically produced dairy products. Duda also urged processing plants to buy milk from Polish farmers rather than importing it. He added that, compared to other countries, the consumption of milk and dairy products in Poland was relatively small, which resulted in 30 to 40 percent of dairy products being exported.
Duda, who is standing for re-election after a five-year term in office, praised Polish farmers and said that the country’s „food market is working very well”. Earlier in the week, Duda urged Poles to spend their holidays in their home country and support a domestic economy hit by the coronavirus crisis.
Probe into revelations about alleged paedophile scandal in Poland
Officials have said a special team will be set up within the National Public Prosecutor’s Office to probe claims made in a documentary about an alleged paedophile scandal in Poland involving celebrities and businessmen.
The documentary was aired by public broadcaster TVP on Wednesday evening. After the screening the Deputy Justice Minister said that his ministry had a policy of „zero tolerance” towards crimes like paedophilia. „I can promise that no one will sweep anything under the rug,” he said.
The scandal centres around the „Zatoka Sztuki” nightclub in Sopot where it is alleged that teenage girls where procured for sex.
Gdańsk joins international music project in response to COVID-19
Gdańsk was among 12 cities around the world where a musical piece for carillon was live streamed to mark UNESCO’s World Day for Cultural Diversity, Dialogue and Development.
The project brought together carillon players from Poland, the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Spain, France, Denmark, Norway, the United States, Brazil, Australia, South Africa and South Korea.
Gdańsk is the only city in Poland and one of eight in Europe to have carillons. The carillon is a musical instrument consisting of a series of bronze bells which are played from a manual and pedal console to produce a melody, or sounded together to play a chord.
