The Polish and Slovak prime ministers met in Warsaw on Friday to discuss ways to boost bilateral trade amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Poland’s Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki told reporters after the meeting that trade between the two neighbouring countries had grown by more than a third in recent years. “This phenomenal growth has been somewhat halted by the epidemic, but we have plans on how to make our business expand again” he said. Morawiecki encouraged Slovak companies to invest in Poland and tourists from that country to visit Poland. Morawiecki held bilateral talks with Slovakia’s new Prime Minister Igor Matovič ahead of a summit of leaders from the Visegrad Group in Warsaw on Friday. The Visegrad Group is a regional cooperation platform that brings together Poland, Slovakia, the Czech Republic and Hungary.

NATO has put a defence plan for Poland and the Baltic states into action after Turkey dropped its objections to the plan this week, according to officials.

NATO leaders agreed in December to the plan at a summit in London, but Turkey had until now blocked the plan unless NATO recognised the Kurdish YPG militia in northern Syria as terrorists. Turkey’s foreign ministry declined to comment on how the deadlock was resolved, however Lithuanian officials have repeatedly said that they were seeking stronger air defense and swifter deployment of allied forces in case of crisis.
