RG News in English: Exhiled opposition leader says foreign powers could mediate in Belarus’s unrest

Belarus’s opposition could ask foreign countries to play a mediation role if Belarus is not able to resolve its own internal conflict, exiled opposition leader has said during a visit to Poland this week. Belarus has been rocked by mass protests since veteran president Alexander Lukashenko won an election on Aug. 9 that his opponents say was rigged. Both the opposition and the European Union have said the crisis is an internal matter that Belarusians should be allowed to deal with themselves. TThe exiled leader who earlier met Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki in Warsaw, added that the opposition might specifically ask the EU for help if Belarus’s leaders crossed the line in their use of force. U.N. human rights experts say they have received reports of hundreds of cases of torture, beatings and mistreatment of protesters by police.

Fifteen people in Poland take their own lives every day, the country’s health ministry said on Thursday, World Suicide Prevention Day. More than 5,000 people kill themselves every year in Poland, a figure higher than the number who die in car accidents in the country, according to the health ministry. World Suicide Prevention Day is organized by the International Association for Suicide Prevention. Its purpose is to raise awareness around the globe that suicide can be prevented, according to the World Health Organization, which supports efforts to stop people taking their own lives. A 24 hour helpline is available in Poland on 527 00 00.

A Polish nun from a convent in Wadowice, southern Poland, the birthplace of Pope John Paul II, has celebrated her 106th birthday. At the same time, she marked the 80th anniversary of her monastic vows. Among the many well-wishers who came to visit her on her birthday was Wadowice mayor Bartosz Kaliński. He told a local journalist: “I visit Sister Adamina every year and have to admit she has not changed a bit over the past few years. I hope we shall be able to meet again next year.” One of the town’s bakeries presented Sister Adamina with a cake, 106 centimetres long.

And finally, two 6 year old girls who were reported missing yesterday in Wrzeszcz have turned up safe and well in Morena after they slipped out of their parents’ attention for a moment. The two girls were being picked up by their parents from a kindergarten in Wrzeszcz and ran towards a nearby park. When their parents arrived at the park, the girls were nowhere to be seen. Several dozen police officers took part in a search for the girls. The girls turned up safe and well at the home of a neighbour in nearby Morena a few hours later in the evening having walked themselves home.
