Poland has been added to the list of countries that the UK enforces quarantine for yesterday. The move was expected as Poland like many other European countries is experiencing a rise in the number of Coronavirus infections.

Travellers arriving in the UK from Poland will have to self-isolate for 14 days from 04:00 on Saturday, regardless of their citizenship. Poland reported another new record daily rise in coronavirus infections on Thursday, confirming 1,967 new cases, the most since the pandemic hit the country in early March. On Wednesday, 30 deaths were attributed to COVID-19, however all but one of the deaths were in people with pre-existing medical conditions. 70,401 people have now recovered from COVID-19 throughout the country, including 706 over the last 24 hours, according to health ministry data.

A new report by the EU’s executive on the rule of law in the bloc’s 27 member states which is critical of Warsaw and Budapest raises “serious concerns,” the Polish and Hungarian justice ministers said on Thursday.

The European Commission report, the bloc’s first such wide-ranging account, “raises serious concerns as to its concept, methodology, sources and content,” the two justice ministers said. They added that the EU report “cannot be used as a basis for further discussions on the rule of law in the European Union.” According to the European Commission report published on Wednesday, democratic standards are facing “important challenges” in Hungary and Poland. “Poland’s justice reforms since 2015 have been a major source of controversy,” the EU report added.

The 11th edition of a Poland-wide social campaign called „The Faces of Depression” was launched in Poland yesterday, marking European Depression Day.

As every year, the organisers, Servier Polska in cooperation with the Polish Psychiatric Association, want to raise awareness of the illness and lower the levels of stigma associated with it. This year’s campaign, like in other years has enlisted the help well known and successful Poles to show that anyone can suffer from and then manage depression.

And finally, from Saturday, Sopot and Kartuzy will enter the red zone of the corona virus zoning system that has been put in place by the Polish health ministry and Gdańsk and Gdynia will enter the yellow zone.

In red zones wearing face masks in public, including outside, is compulsory; gyms, cinemas, health resorts and some public recreational spaces will again be closed and cultural events and fairs are also suspended, while sporting events will no longer be able to admit an audience. Capacity in public transport will be capped at half the available number of seats. Indoor and outdoor premises will only be allowed to admit one person per four square metres of space. Churches will also have attendance limited; however, outdoor religious celebrations can admit up to 150 people. In yellow zones, sporting and cultural events can still take place, and cinemas will be able to operate at 25% of their usual capacity. Here too, both indoor and outdoor premises will only be allowed to admit one person per four square metres. Other restrictions, for example on wearing masks in shops and church attendance, will remain unchanged.

Weather

On friday there will be sunny intervals in a moderate breeze with temperatures reaching 16 degrees centigrade (61 degrees Fahrenheit) during the day, dropping to 11 degrees centigrade overnight. Tomorrow will be a cloudy day with a moderate breeze and temperatures reaching 19 degrees centigrade during the day and 14 degrees overnight.
