A 101-year-old Polish woman from Białystok has become one of the oldest survivors of COVID-19 after spending more than two weeks in the hospital.
Last year, a 100-year-old Polish man beat the coronavirus after a course of treatment at a clinical hospital in Warsaw. Later that same spring, a 103-year-old Polish woman recovered from COVID-19 after a month-long hospitalization in southern Poland.
The positive news comes amidst a new surge in coronavirus infections in Poland and elsewhere on the European continent.
Poland on Tuesday recorded 8,245 new coronavirus infections and 60 additional deaths, bringing its total number of cases to nearly 2.5 million (2,456,709) and fatalities to over 55,000 (55,065).
According to Eurostat, Poland’s unemployment was a modest 3.1 percent in February, the lowest rate among the 27 member states of the European Union.
The Czech Republic had the second-lowest unemployment rate in the EU in February, at 3.2 percent, while the Netherlands came in third, with 3.6 percent, according to the Eurostat agency.
On the other end of the spectrum, Spain had the highest seasonally-adjusted jobless rate in the EU, at 16.1 percent, while Greek unemployment was the second-highest at 15.8 percent, the agency’s data showed.
Poland’s Central Statistical Office (GUS), which uses a different methodology, reported last month that the Polish jobless rate held steady at 6.5 percent in February, unchanged from the previous month.
Two US-based translators have been announced as recipients of Poland’s prestigious “Found in Translation” award for 2021.
Ewa Małachowska-Pasek, a lecturer in Polish and Czech studies at the University of Michigan, and Megan Thomas, a Polish translator, received the accolade for their translation of “The Career of Nicodemus Dyzma,” a 1932 novel by Polish writer Tadeusz Dołęga-Mostowicz.
According to Stanley Bill, an expert on Polish studies, the hero of the novel, an unemployed clerk, is “a byword in Polish culture for the accidental rise of an opportunistic swindler to the heights of society and politics.”
Tadeusz Dołęga-Mostowicz (1898-1939) was one of the most prolific Polish writers of the pre-World War II period. The “Found in Translation” award, launched in 2008, is the highest distinction given to translators of Polish literature abroad.
