After weeks of discussions, European Union leaders have finally agreed to place an embargo on most Russian oil imports in response to the Kremlin’s decision to invade Ukraine.
Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki praised the EU embargo on Russian oil as “very important news for the security of Poland and Europe, and good news for Ukraine, which is fighting for its independence and sovereignty.”
The oil ban was unveiled by European Council President Charles Michel, who said that it would put “maximum pressure on Russia to end the war.”
The sixth round of punitive measures also includes removing Russia’s biggest lender, Sberbank, from the SWIFT global financial messaging system, in addition to sanctions on individuals responsible for war crimes in Ukraine.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen welcomed the agreement on banning Russian oil, saying it would “effectively cut around 90 percent of oil imports from Russia to the EU by the end of the year.”

Inflation in Poland stood at 13.9 percent in year-on-year terms in May, according to a flash estimate released by the Central Statistical Office (GUS) yesterday.
The prices of consumer goods and services in April were 12.4 percent higher than in the same month a year earlier, according to GUS. In March, Poland’s consumer price index stood at 11 percent.
In May, the Polish central bank’s Monetary Policy Council raised key interest rates for the eighth consecutive time in a bid to tame rising inflation.

In response to rising operating costs, the price of tickets for trams, buses, and other forms of local transport in Trójmiasto will increase as of June 1.
Passengers will no longer have the option to purchase a one-way ticket for PLN 3.80 and an hourly ticket for PLN 4.40. Instead, both tickets will be replaced by a single ticket for PLN 4.80, valid for 75 minutes of transit. Single-use metropolitan tickets purchased through the application will still be PLN 0.20 cheaper.
Daily tickets will also increase in price from PLN 14 to 18, and a monthly pass in Gdańsk will increase from PLN 99 to 109. In Gdynia, a monthly pass for all lines and all days of the week will now cost PLN 106 instead of PLN 98.
In Wejherowo and suburban communities served by local transit, the prices of monthly tickets will not increase.

In honor of Children’s Day, children under the age of 16 will be able to travel by train for free today.
The offer applies to all types of trains – Express InterCity Premium (EIP), Express InterCity (EIC), InterCity (IC) and Twoich Linii Kolejowych (TLK).
Children from 4 to 16 years old will need to show identification to get a free ticket at the sales office or from a conductor. In the case of Pendolino (EIP) trains, a free ticket must be obtained before boarding the train.
Parents of children under 16 will also be eligible for an additional 30% discount when buying a family ticket (Bilet rodzinny).

Poland’s national football team started training in Warsaw earlier this week ahead of its upcoming Nations League games against Wales, Belgium, and the Netherlands.
Poland will face off against Wales in Wrocław tonight at 18:00 before taking on Belgium in Brussels on June 8 and the Netherlands in Rotterdam on June 11.
On June 14, Poland will again play against Belgium on home turf in Warsaw.
