The Polish government has approved a bill that sets a guaranteed price of PLN 996, around EUR 207, for a tonne of coal for households. The move was announced yesterday by the Climate and Environment Minister. She said that the price was the average price of coal over the previous year.
Under the programme, households will buy coal from importers for no more than PLN 966 per tonne, while the remaining part of the price will be covered by the government. The scheme applies to households, cooperatives and housing associations that use coal for heating and will cover up to three tonnes of coal per household at the set price. The government has allocated PLN 3 billion (EUR 645 million) for the programme.

Negotiations on transferring some German tanks to Poland in return for Poland’s tank transfer to fighting Ukraine, have stalled, according to the Polish President’s chief defence aide.
In an interview with Polish Radio station RMF FM, the aide said, „Poland and Germany are allies, but their alliance is at times difficult. There are no signs of good will, let us hope that will change”. In late May, Andrzej Duda, the Polish president, expressed disappointment with Germany’s weariness.

The Polish capital’s councillors have voted in favour of naming a street in Warsaw’s business district after „The Hobbit” and „The Lord of the Rings” protagonist Gandalf, a Polish newspaper wrote.
The famous sorcerer from J. R.R. Tolkien’s fantasy novels will find home in the post-industrial part of Warsaw’s most populated district, Mokotów, according to the Polish daily, Gazeta Wyborcza. A couple of years ago, the neighbourhood known as Industrial Służewiec had its landscape reshaped from one full of factories to a business area. Its dense concentration of office buildings and a heavy traffic made it famous all over Poland for its humorous moniker „Mordor”. Councillors voted that name Gandalf Street „shall pass,” along with the adjacent Tolkien Street.

A 45 year old man has been charged following a fatal road accident in Gdańsk on June 1st in which a 78 year old woman died. The accident occurred as the man approached stationary traffic at excessive speed, colliding with a BMW in which the woman was killed, before veering off the road and hitting two more vehicles.
The man, who has pleaded guilty to the charges, faces a sentence of between 6 months and up to 8 years in prison. He has been bailed with a bond of PLN 30,000.
