Poland Condemns Killing of Civilians in Israel-Hamas Conflict

The Polish Foreign Ministry condemned the killing of civilians in the recent escalation of the Israel-Hamas conflict in a statement made on Wednesday: “Poland is outraged by the unacceptable toll of innocent civilian lives taken by the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict.”

The statement was made partly in reference to the recent bombing of Al-Ahli Hospital in Gaza, which reportedly killed hundreds of Palestinian civilians. Israel and Hamas have both blamed each other for the attack, with President Biden supporting Israel on the issue citing U.S. Intelligence, there has been no information released to the public from a formal investigation at this point. The ministry continued to stress that “civilians must be protected in accordance with international and humanitarian law,” and called on both sides to de-escalate the conflict. The war escalated two weeks ago when Hamas operatives infiltrated the Israeli border, killing or kidnapping several Israeli government/military personnel as well as civilians. Hamas maintains that such attacks are justified after a “decades long occupation and genocide by Israeli forces.”

European Commission Sides with Poland in Waste Dispute with Germany

The European Commission has agreed with Poland in its waste dispute with Germany. The disagreement concerns 35 tonnes of waste left and illegally stored in the Polish Municipalities of Tuplice and Stary Jawor by German transport operators. The European Commission’s decision was reached during a hearing in late September, and a 30 day time period was given to Germany to take back the waste and dispose of it properly, which has not yet occurred.

Polish Climate and Environment Minister Anna Moskwa made the statement: “Germany must take back the waste illegally stored in Poland,” remarking that the EC has conceded to Poland’s position in the matter, and that “We demand that the authorities in Berlin collect the waste that was left behind in the coming days. If they don’t comply immediately, the next step is to file a complaint with the Court of Justice of the European Union.”

Polish Universities Nominated for Elsevier Research Award

Three Polish institutions have been nominated for the Elsevier Research Impact Leaders Award for 2023 for Engineering and Technology. The nominees are Gdańsk University of Technology, Jagiellonian University in Kraków, and Opole University of Technology.

Universities who receive the award from Elsevier, a scholarly publishing company, are recognized for significant impact on scientific research and its visibility worldwide.

Maritime Border Guard Commissions Two Hovercraft for Almost 30 Million PLN

A contract for the commission of two hovercraft was signed with Griffon Hoverwork Limited by the maritime border guard on Monday. The purpose of the vehicles will be control and intervention activities. The value of the contract is over 28 million PLN or 6.5 million USD.

The deadline for the delivery of the units to the Kashubian Border Guard Base in Pasłęka is set for October 31, 2024. The purpose of the hovercraft is to serve patrol-intervention and search & rescue operations in a wide variety of conditions from solid or crushed ice in freezing temperatures, water in the warmer seasons, and overgrown swampy terrain. The craft will have a range of 20 nautical miles from shore.

Polish-Moldova Football Match Ends in a Draw

Poland finished its most recent qualifying match with Moldova 1-1, leaving fans anxious to see if Poland will qualify for the European Tournament next year. Poland is ranked 30th in the world by FIFA, and will be playing Czech Republic ranked 37th in their last qualifier in Warsaw on November 17th.
