Poland’s President Andrzej Duda has announced that he will convene the first session of the country’s newly elected parliament on November 13th. The announcement came after the president this week met with the leaders of the country’s main political parties to discuss the formation of a new government.
Duda did not say whom he would task with forming a new government. „This is a new situation … there has never been a situation where one party won and the others claim that they will have the majority,” he said.
Poland’s ruling conservative Law and Justice (PiS) party has named outgoing Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki as its candidate to lead the new government. Meanwhile, three opposition groups that together command a majority in the new parliament have put forward opposition leader Donald Tusk, a former top EU official and Prime Minister of Poland, as their prime ministerial candidate.

An EU funded and EU wide study has found that Poland suffers from low levels of racial discrimination against people of African descent compared to other EU countries.
The report’s overall conclusions show that overall levels of discrimination have not declined since the last such report for 2016. There was, however, optimism for Poland – found to have low levels of discrimination against people of African descent.
The highest levels of discrimination were in Austria, Germany and Finland, and the lowest in Poland and Portugal with roughly „half” the level of discrimination of the entire sample of EU countries.

Poland have slipped from 30th to 31st place in the latest world football rankings, which were released on Thursday. World champions Argentina remain at the top of the FIFA rankings, followed by World Cup runners-up France. Brazil are at No. 3, ahead of England in fourth spot.
Poland reached the last 16 of last year’s World Cup in Qatar before being eliminated by eventual runners-up France. Poland in 2017 had climbed to No. 5 in the FIFA table, the best result for the Polish team since the world football governing body’s ranking was launched in 1992. Poland’s lowest place in the world rankings was 78th, in 2013.

And finally, the budget airline Wizz Air is set to expand its fleet and destinations at Gdańsk airport, the company has said.
The announcement was made during a press conference this week with the operator adding flights to Valencia in Spain and Rome Fiumicino in Italy, and will also increase frequencies on 12 existing routes from Gdańsk.
The company is also set to expand its fleet of aircraft to 8 at the airport in April 2024. The company has been operating flights from Gdańsk for 19 years and has carried over 25 million passengers from the airport during this time. Wizz Air offers 36 routes from Gdańsk to 17 countries in Europe.
