Government “Taking All Steps” to Evacuate Poles from Gaza
Poland’s government is taking all possible actions to evacuate Polish nationals from the Gaza Strip according to Foreign Minister Zbigniew Rau. Rau stated “Both parties of the Gaza Conflict should immediately cease hostilities and allow civilians to leave the Gaza Strip. The staff of Poland’s diplomatic and consular service and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs are making every effort to help Poles escape the war zone. We are doing everything to ensure they are safe again.”
On Wednesday, Egypt’s Rhafa crossing was opened for the first time since October 7th. Egyptian authorities have agreed to admit around 90 injured Palestinians and 450 people with dual citizenship and foreign passports. Since October 7th, about 1,400 Israelis have been killed with 239 taken hostage, about 8,700 Palestinians have been killed in Israel’s retaliatory attacks, with Israel claiming to have struck over 11,000 targets in Gaza on Wednesday.

Russia’s War Machine Economically Unstable
Russia’s new budget reveals that it plans to increase defense spending by 70% amounting to 115 billion USD, about 6% of the country’s GDP. This move is reportedly meant to support a “long-term war economy” in relation to their invasion of Ukraine, but its economic prospects are unlikely to be able to support such action according to “The Economist” magazine.
To achieve this, Russia expects its oil and gas revenue to increase by 25%, the ruble to maintain a ratio of no more than 90: 1 with the U.S. Dollar, and its GDP to rise by 2.3% in 2024. These scenarios could be overly optimistic, considering political pressure and economic sanctions against Russia, Central and Western Europe developing means for energy independence, expensive imports due to the devalued ruble, and the Bank of Russia raising interest rates to 15%. Moreover, more defense spending without economic growth would mean less funding for healthcare and education and higher taxes, and therefore a further disgruntled populace, which could spell disaster for Russia’s war effort and stability as a whole.

Poland Planning Experiments on International Space Station
The Polish Space Agency (POLSA) has released a proposed list of experiments to be conducted on the International Space Station (ISS). The experiments will range from pharmaceutical to geological, showing Poland’s commitment to contribute research and technology to the international community in space.
The Head of POLSA, Grzegorz Wrochna, also mentioned a unique opportunity for Polish scientists and engineers to access ISS facilities, allowing for research otherwise unavailable on Earth. In partnership with the European Space Agency (ESA) and the Polish Ministry of Development and Technology, a competition called “Direction Space” has been opened until November 10th. Students and doctoral candidates will be given an opportunity to submit experimental proposals, and the winners will be given the opportunity to conduct further research with experts at CERN and ESA facilities.
Iga Świątek Advances in WTA Tennis Finals
Poland’s Iga Świątek has advanced in the WTA finals tournament in Cancun, Mexico after her victory over Czech Republic’s Marketa Vondrousova. Świątek, ranked No. 2 in the world, defeated Vondrousova 7-6, 6-0 and will next face America’s Coco Gauff. The tournament will run until November 5th, and will provide the opportunity for Świątek to regain her No. 1 spot in the world rankings.
