Radio Gdansk English News: The European Commission has proposed boosting the fund overall to 40 billion euros

The EU’s executive has proposed upping Poland’s share of the bloc’s Just Transition Fund to 8 billion euros, with the country to receive the biggest slice of the pie. The European Commission has proposed boosting the fund overall to 40 billion euros.

The money aims to help member states speed up efforts towards climate neutrality. Poland was initially to receive 2 billion euros. Documents published on Thursday by the commission indicate that the country is now in line for four times that amount, and more than any other EU state. Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said on Wednesday that the European Union’s recovery plan and its proposal to hike the Just Transition Fund was good news and a starting point for further negotiations.

Around 6,000 Polish and American troops are preparing to hold joint exercises in Poland next week.

The „Defender Europe 20 Plus” drills will see around 100 tanks and more than 230 combat vehicles deployed to a training ground in the north west of the country . The first columns of military vehicles will head to the training site which is around 240 km west of Gdańsk shortly after midnight on Monday. The exercises, which have been modified from original plans, are due to take place from June 5th to June 19th.

The UK and Poland have signed a treaty that secures the right of British and Polish citizens to stand and vote in local elections in each other’s countries following the UK’s exit from the EU.

This ensures that British people living in Poland and Polish citizens living in the UK have the right to choose who represents them in local government in the country where they reside. The treaty was signed by the UK’s Ambassador to Poland and the Polish Secretary of State for Legal and Treaty Affairs on Friday. Poland is the fourth country to sign a voting rights treaty with the UK, following treaties signed with Spain, Portugal and Luxembourg last year.

And finally,Polish police say they have busted a gang suspected of circulating counterfeit British bank notes.

Three men have been detained by Poland’s Central Bureau of Police Investigation. The suspects are believed to have exchanged fake UK 20 pound notes in several dozen currency exchange points in Gdańsk and other towns in northern Poland, the bureau said on its website. Officers searched the suspects and their places of residence, and found over 120 banknotes. The serial numbers on many notes were the same, the bureau added. The suspects could face up to 15 years in jail if found guilty.
