A Polish medical biologist has received the Knight’s Cross from Italian President Sergio Mattarella for his services in fighting the coronavirus epidemic.
Maciej Tarkowski, who has worked in Italy for 13 years, is a member of a six-strong research team from Milan’s Sacco hospital and the city’s university, which at the end of February isolated the Italian strain of the coronavirus. Tarkowski has said that thanks to the isolation of the Italian coronavirus strain it would be possible to establish how it differs from the Chinese pathogen. The Knights Cross is the highest ranking honour of the Italian republic.
