Radio Gdansk News in English: Morawiecki meets with Belarusian opposition leader

Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki and Belarusian opposition leader Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya met yesterday in Warsaw to discuss support for the democratic opposition in Belarus. According to Morawiecki’s later post on Facebook, the two leaders discussed “the pro-democratic aspirations of the Belarusian people, the current situation in Belarus, and the shape of further assistance for the opposition in Belarus.”

After holding talks with Tsikhanouskaya at his office in Warsaw, Morawiecki declared that the Belarusian opposition “is not going to give up – and we will support them in solidarity during this difficult time, to the best of our current capabilities.”

The Polish government has repeatedly called for increasing international aid to Belarus, with President Andrzej Duda addressing the United Nations on the subject in September, and Morawiecki urging leaders at a recent EU summit to back a plan for wide-ranging international economic assistance to the country.

Polish soldiers to assist in fight against coronavirus

As the number of coronavirus cases continues to rise across the country, the Polish government has announced plans to bring in soldiers to replace civilian medics at swab collection points.

In a press conference yesterday, Deputy Defence Minister Wojciech Skurkiewicz said the move would free up civilian staff like paramedics and nurses to focus on other aspects of fighting the latest coronavirus outbreak.

The Polish health ministry reported 9,291 new coronavirus infections and 107 more deaths on Tuesday, bringing the total number of cases to over 192,000 (192,539) and the current death toll to over 3,700 (3,721).

In Pomerania, 484 new cases were confirmed yesterday, along with 7 additional deaths. Most new cases were reported in the city of Gdańsk (97) and the powiats of Kartuzy (72) and Wejherowo (64).

Government urges pensioners to stay home

The Polish government has responded to the recent surge in cases by setting up temporary field hospitals, introducing additional restrictions, and encouraging at-risk populations, such as pensioners and the immuno-compromised, to exercise additional precautions.

At a press conference yesterday, Marlena Maląg, the minister for family, labour and social policy, directly encouraged pensioners to “zostań w domu,” assuring them that the government “will make sure that you have all the necessities of daily life delivered to your home.”

The request comes in addition to the creation of special shopping hours for seniors introduced as part of the latest round of restrictions. As of last week, only people aged 60 and over are allowed to shop in stores and pharmacies between 10:00 and 12:00 on weekdays.

Maląg added that even while shopping, pensioners should also “remember to keep an appropriate distance, disinfect their hands, and wear face masks.”

One man’s trash is another man’s treasure

An unusual art exhibition is opening today at the Plama Gdańsk Archipelago Kultury (GAK) in Gdańsk Zaspa.

The works of the Gdańsk-based KABINA collective feature objects and installations created from rubbish, waste, and other found objects. According to artists Julia Miotk, Adrian Kurzawa, and Piotr Detlaf, the collective uses materials from beaches, sidewalks, rubbish bins, and pawn shops, to create artwork which seeks to find charm in broken, disposable objects.

The exhibition opens this evening at 19:00 at Plama GAK (Pilotów 11 in Gdańsk Zaspa). Due to current sanitary restrictions, only 3 people at a time will be allowed in, and mask-wearing is mandatory. The exhibition will be open Monday through Friday from 10.00 to 17.00, from now until the end of October.
