Polish President Andrzej Duda has said he is “saddened” at ongoing protests against a tightening of abortion laws but “understands” women who have taken to the streets around the country. Speaking to private broadcaster Polsat News, Duda appealed for protesters to stay calm. At the same time, he condemned „acts of aggression, profanation, insulting religious feelings, attacks on churches, vulgar behaviour and words, and intimidation of people.” Seven straight days of demonstrations have seen protesters daubing slogans on church buildings and disrupting masses. Polish conservative leader Jarosław Kaczyński earlier on Wednesday condemned the “criminal” opposition for encouraging street protests amid an escalating coronavirus epidemic.

Polish lawmakers have backed a government plan to exempt more firms from corporate income tax amid the coronavirus crisis, officials have announced. Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said last month that, despite an economic slowdown amid the global pandemic, his government was ready to exempt more companies from corporate income tax beginning next year if they decided to reinvest their profits.The lower house of parliament on Wednesday overwhelmingly approved those plans. The measure now goes to the Senate, the upper house of Poland’s parliament, for further debate.

Republican diplomat Richard Grenell, a critic of the controversial Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline in Europe, may take over as US President Donald Trump’s next ambassador to Warsaw, according to a report. Grenell, a former US envoy to Berlin and an outspoken critic of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline being built from Russia to Germany under the Baltic Sea, may replace Georgette Mosbacher as ambassador to Warsaw if Donald Trump is re-elected next month, according to the Dziennik Gazeta Prawna. Grenell, who served more than 10 years in the US Department of State and worked briefly as acting director of national intelligence, is an experienced diplomat and an influential White House adviser as well as a prominent gay rights activist.

And finally, Gdańsk has its very own Ninja warrior in the form of 29 year old Mateusz Skrodzki. The primary school teacher from Gdansk has become the first person to reach the final of the polish TV competition Ninja Warrior Polska for the second time. The TV show is based on a challenging obstacle course that contestants must complete, with the contestants with the best results progressing to the next stage. Unfortunately our hero didn’t win the final, being eliminated on one of the trickier obstacles. He said that after the final, the nicest prize was his students give him an enthusiastic round of applause on his return to classes.
