Russia’s Gazprom says it has filed an appeal in a Polish court against a multi-billion fine imposed by Poland’s antitrust authority over the construction of the contested Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline. Last month Poland’s Office of Competition and Consumer Protection ordered Gazprom to pay over PLN 29 billion and imposed a penalty of over PLN 234 million on five other companies taking part in the construction of the gas pipeline. Warsaw has strongly criticised Nord Stream 2 amid concerns that the pipeline from Russia to Germany under the Baltic sea will make the European Union more dependent on Russian gas. Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki has called Nord Stream 2 “a new hybrid weapon” aimed at the European Union and NATO.

Belarusian president Alexander Lukashenko has warned that doctors in his country who leave for Poland to help in its battle against the COVID-19 epidemic will not be allowed back in. Lukashenko was quoted by Polish state news agency as saying “We have to treat our own people. But we won’t hold anyone by force. However, people should be aware that they will not be able to come back; they will work there and earn that big money that they left for,” Lukashenko’s comments came after Polish Deputy Health Minister said in an interview with the Dziennik Gazeta Prawna newspaper that Poland was open to doctors from other countries as it battles a surging epidemic.
