Poland will receive up to PLN 230 billion for the transformation of its energy sector under a new agreement on climate targets struck by European Union member states on Friday. Under the deal, Poland will obtain additional funds from Brussels to mitigate the costs of moving to greener energy.
Following a two-day summit in Brussels, including talks through the night, EU leaders reached a long-awaited agreement on tougher targets for curbing emissions. The 27 member states pledged to cut greenhouse gas emissions by at least 55 percent by the end of the decade compared with 1990 levels, a measure in line with the bloc’s earlier commitment to achieve climate neutrality by 2050.
Police said on Thursday they have detained a 23-year-old man who aimed to set off a car bomb outside a Warsaw police station. According to a tweet posted by the Warsaw police, the man had driven up to a police station and started honking his horn to attract police attention. Police believe the man then intended to detonate the device. According to the police, the last few weeks have seen increasing hate attacks against police and their families. During recent protests against a ban on eugenic abortion, protesters have accused officers of heavy-handed policing during the demonstrations.
A picture by Polish Art Deco artist Tamara Łempicka has been sold for PLN 4.5 million, a record on the domestic art market for a painting by a woman. The painting, entitled “Reading Girl I”, was sold on Thursday at the DESA Unicum auction house in the Polish capital The picture, which comes from around 1951, was considered by friends of Łempicka to be a disguised self-portrait. Tamara Łempicka is the most expensive Polish artist in history and the third most expensive artist in the world. Her works are part of collections of celebrities such as Madonna, Barbra Streisand and Jack Nicholson.
And finally, a new laundromat has opened in Gdansk Orunia that will serve homeless people who will be able to wash their clothes for free and perhaps find a job. Currently, only blankets and bedsheets which are being used by local homeless charities can be washed, but in the second phase of the project in the New Year, the premises will open for the homeless to wash their own clothes for free. The initiative organizers also hope to help some of their clients find a job, because they will need to hire at least 3 people to manage the operation.
