RG News in English: New tactics in Poland to speed up anti-COVID drive

Poland will extend the interval between the first and second doses of COVID-19 vaccines, an official said on Thursday as the country seeks to speed up inoculations amid an accelerating epidemic. In another measure as Poland races to contain the virus, people who have been infected will receive a single shot six months after they tested positive. From next week, the second dose of AstraZeneca vaccines will be administered 12 weeks after the first injection.

Meanwhile, Pfizer vaccines will be administered in two doses 42 days apart. The top aide said, „Everything will be in accordance with manufacturers’ recommendations. The current research results show that this type of operation can be performed without any detriment to the effectiveness of the vaccines”.

Polish sprinter Ewa Swoboda has been ruled out of the upcoming European Athletics Indoor Championships due to testing positive for the coronavirus.

Swoboda is the reigning European indoor champion in the women’s 60m dash. Poland has selected a team of more than 40 athletes for the 2021 European Athletics Indoor Championships, which are set to begin in its north-central city of Toruń on Thursday evening.

Poland topped the medal table at the last two European Athletics Indoor Championships and will be looking to follow suit for a third time on home soil at the Toruń Arena venue.

Unemployment in Poland was a modest 3.1 percent in January, the lowest rate in the 27-nation European Union, the bloc’s statistics agency reported on Thursday.

Amid the coronavirus pandemic, the Czech Republic had the second-lowest unemployment in the European Union in January, at 3.2 percent, while the Netherlands came in third, with 3.6 percent, according to the Eurostat agency. Meanwhile, Greece had the highest seasonally-adjusted jobless rate in the EU, at 16.2 percent while Spanish unemployment was the second-highest at 16 percent.

A car that has been abandoned on the beach at Gdynia at Gdynia Orłowo is proving hard to shift. According to a report in the Trójmiasto.pl website, the car on the beach about a week ago and despite complaints to the authorities, has still not been moved, causing an obstruction and eyesore at the popular beauty spot.

A spokesman for the city guard stated that according to traffic regulations, cars cannot be moved unless they constitute a traffic hazard. He added that the owner of the vehicle has been found and if he does not move the vehicle soon is likely to be fined and the vehicle will eventually be towed away.
