Polish President Andrzej Duda is set to travel to Tokyo as the Japanese city prepares to host the Summer Olympics.
A detailed program of Duda’s visit is not yet available, but officials say he will hold talks with other international leaders expected to arrive in Japan for the opening ceremonies of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. Duda’s itinerary includes a meeting with Japanese Emperor Naruhito. The opening ceremony of the Tokyo Olympics will be held at the city’s National Stadium on Friday. The Games will last until August 8. Poland is sending a team of more than 210 athletes.

Poland’s health ministry has warned the country may be on the cusp of a fourth wave of the pandemic amid an upsurge in new infections caused by the Delta coronavirus variant.
The Delta strain accounts for 54.5 percent of all new coronavirus cases confirmed in the country during the last few days, and it is expected to become the dominant variant soon, officials said on Wednesday. Overall, health authorities have identified 194 Delta strain infections across the country so far. Deputy Health Minister Waldemar Kraska told Polish Radio on Wednesday morning that „experts estimate that herd immunity against the Delta coronavirus strain can only be achieved when 85 to 90 percent of the population is fully inoculated”. “There is a lot of work ahead of us to reach that goal,” he said.

Polish violinist Maria Włoszczowska has been appointed the new leader of the Royal Northern Sinfonia, one of Britain’s finest chamber orchestras.
Founded in 1958, the orchestra is currently based in Gateshead in the north-east of England. Włoszczowska’s debut in the new role will be at the season-opening concert on September 18th. Włoszczowska, 29, is among the most prominent young Polish violinists. She was a prizewinner at the International Henryk Wieniawski Violin Competition in Poznań, western Poland, in 2016, and she also won First Prize and Audience Prize at the International Johann Sebastian Bach Competition in Leipzig, Germany, in 2018.

A fund-raising campaign to help two disabled twins from Gdańsk and their mother who looks after them on her own has raised over PLN 13,000.
The money is going towards the rehabilitation stay of Bartek and Kuba from Gdańsk, who, due to illness, must be under 24-hour care of an adult. The cost of the trip is over PLN 19,000. The campaign hopes to raise another PLN 6,000 to cover the remaining costs of the convalescence period. The stay is to help not only both brothers, but also to provide time for their mother, who also suffered from a number of medical conditions, to rest. Mrs Salwoska underwent an orthopaedic surgery this week and is now recovering at home. Donations are being handled by the fund-raising website
