Radio Gdansk News in English: Another evacuation flight lands in Warsaw amid Afghanistan chaos

A second Polish plane carrying people evacuated from Afghanistan has landed in Warsaw. The plane touched down not long after the first evacuation flight from Afghanistan landed in the Polish capital on Wednesday night. According to the Polish prime minister’s top aide, 90 more people were still waiting to be evacuated at Kabul airport. On Wednesday, Polish President Andrzej Duda said his country would send up to 100 soldiers to Afghanistan to help secure the evacuation.

The Taliban, a radical Islamist movement and military organization, has now taken over most of the country, while the US-supported government has fallen and President Ashraf Ghani left the country.

Polish President Andrzej Duda will visit Ukraine and Moldova next week to offer encouragement to these two countries as they step up their pro-Western course, his aides have said. The visit comes as both Ukraine and Moldova prepare to celebrate 30 years of independence from the Soviet Union.

The Polish head of state is scheduled to head to Kiev on Sunday. The next day he will join a number of other heads of state and government, as well as representatives from international organisations, to discuss the situation in the Crimean Peninsula, which has been occupied by Russia since 2014.

On Thursday, August 26, Duda will start a two-day visit to Moldova.

Polish firefighters say they have helped save a Greek town west of Athens from the wildfires that have been ravaging forests around the country’s capital. The operation started on Wednesday afternoon and continued well into the night, with parts of the fire still not contained on Thursday morning.

Earlier this month, Poland deployed more than 140 firefighters and over 40 fire trucks to support wildfire response efforts in Greece. A Polish Fire Brigade Commander said, „“We finally managed to stop the fire at the edge of the town. The fight against the flames continued throughout the night, and today it appears that the situation is under control”.

Sopot city hall yesterday handed over the keys to 40 new apartments built as social housing to eligible families. The initiative aims to provide housing for families who would not otherwise be able to afford to purchase a property in Sopot.

In recent years the city has built around 200 apartments and plans to build another 250 in the coming 6 years. The city held a lottery for the apartments where eligibility was based on being a resident of Sopot, or having recently moved out of Sopot but wanting to return and based on specific income criteria as well.

The flats will remain the property of the city and made available to other families in case the original families move elsewhere.
