The combined death toll from the devastating earthquake that hit southeastern Turkey and northern Syria last week has climbed to over 28,000, with rescuers still searching for victims under the rubble.

Polish firefighters on the ground in Turkey were attempting to reach another person trapped under the rubble on Saturday, with dogs reportedly confirming the presence of a victim, but rescuers unable to communicate with them.

Polish firefighters are conducting search and rescue operations in the town of Besni, where nearly thirty houses collapsed from the earthquake. So far, the team has managed to save 12 people.

The HUSAR Poland rescue group, comprised of 76 firefighters and eight trained dogs, flew to Turkey on Monday evening, a few hours after the quake. The group was initially scheduled to depart on Monday, but the commander-in-chief of the State Fire Service said over the weekend that the firefighters would stay in Turkey until at least Thursday, February 16.

Even though almost a week has passed since the earthquake, survivors are still being pulled out from under the rubble. In Gaziantep, Turkey, a 13-year-old girl was rescued early this morning, while in the southern province of Hatay, a seven-month-old boy was rescued after spending 140 hours under the rubble.

The Polish-made video game „This War of Mine” has been added to the collection at the world-renowned Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York.

Since its premiere in 2014, the survival-themed strategy game has garnered widespread acclaim in Poland and abroad, becoming the first videogame to be included in Polish school curricula.

„This War of Mine” transports players to a fictional war-torn city, where they must navigate challenges faced by civilians trying to survive amid an active conflict, including finding resources, comforting the mentally distressed, and tending to the critically ill and injured.

Created by Warsaw-based 11 Bit Studios, the game’s storyline draws inspiration from real-life conflicts, such as the Warsaw Uprising in 1944, the Siege of Sarajevo from 1992-1996, and the Syrian Civil War, which has been ongoing since 2011.

„This War of Mine” is part of the „Never Alone. Video Games and Other Interactive Design” exhibition currently on at MoMA, which runs through July 16, 2023.

A goal by Polish amp-footballer Marcin Oleksy is among the final three contenders for the 2022 FIFA Puskas Award, which recognizes the most beautiful goal of the year.

Oleksy’s acrobatic bicycle kick was chosen over goals scored by non-disabled global stars, including PSG star Kylian Mbappe, AC Milan’s Theo Hernandez, and Mario Balotelli of FC Sion.

The Pole scored his remarkable goal on 7 November in a 4-0 top-tier amp-football match between his team, Warta Poznań, and Stal Rzeszów.

Amputee football or „amp futbol” is an adaptive sport featuring seven players on each team: defenders, midfielders, and forwards with lower extremity amputations and a goalkeeper with an upper extremity amputation.

Oleksy’s goal will now compete for the award against goals netted by Dimitri Payet of Olympique de Marseille and Richarlison of Tottenham Hotspur.

According to Oleksy, he was aware his goal „could have a significant impact in the amp-football community and beyond, but I didn’t expect it to be quite so resonant.”

The winner of 2022’s most beautiful goal will be announced at the gala „The Best FIFA Football Awards,” set to take place in Zurich on 27 February.
