Despite numerous appeals by actors and industry veterans, the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has rejected Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s request to speak during tonight’s Oscars ceremony.

Zelensky has delivered virtual addresses at several other prestigious cultural events, including the film festivals in Cannes, Berlin, and Venice, along with the Grammy Awards and Golden Globes in the United States.

During his recorded speech at the Golden Globes in January, Zelensky said there were „still battles and tears ahead,” but he could already „say with certainty who was the best last year – it was you. The free people of the free world. Those who united around the support of the free Ukrainian people in our common struggle for freedom.”

In a written statement to the Polish Press Agency, the Jan Karski Society in Poland called the Academy’s decision and treatment of Zelensky „simply disgraceful.” The letter went on to compare the Academy’s response to Hollywood’s treatment of Jan Karski, who was ignored by film studios when he traveled to the US in 1943 to mobilize support to stop Hitler and the Holocaust.

Polish filmmaker Jerzy Skolimowski told Polish Radio his film „EO” is unlikely to win an Oscar at the 95th Academy Awards but added that being nominated in the best international film category is „a big honor” for him.

According to Skolimowski, Germany’s Netflix-produced adaptation of „All Quiet on the Western Front” is „a firm favorite” to win an Oscar in several categories, including Best International Feature Film. The 1930s film adaptation of the WWI-era novel won two Oscars, including Best Picture in 1930, while the 2022 adaption is currently nominated for nine awards.

The 95th annual Academy Awards ceremony will take place tonight around 1:00 CET at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles and will be broadcast in Poland by Canal+ Premium and Canal+ Online.

Poland’s first LNG delivery via a new, South Korean-produced gas carrier ship arrived in Świnoujście yesterday.

The vessel „Lech Kaczyński” was carrying around 70,000 tons of LNG from the United States (roughly 100 million cubic meters), the equivalent to the average weekly natural gas consumption for all households in Poland.

The vessel is the first of eight gas carrier ships chartered by Poland’s state-owned PGNiG oil and gas company from PKP Orlen. A second vessel is due to set sail to the United States this year, with two more ships scheduled for delivery in 2024 and another four in 2025.

Poland has received 219 LNG deliveries thus far, with LNG supplies covering approximately one-third of Poland’s natural gas demand. Most deliveries came from Qatar (116), followed by the United States (83) and Norway.
