Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau made an unannounced visit to Kyiv over the weekend for talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

In a joint news conference on Saturday, Trudeau announced that Canada would provide some USD 400 million for new military aid to Ukraine, promising to “be there with (you) as much as it takes, for as long as it takes.”

A joint declaration released after the talks confirmed Canada’s official support for “Ukraine to become a NATO member as soon as conditions allow for it” and declared that “Ukraine and Canada look forward to addressing these issues at the NATO Summit in Vilnius in July 2023.”

Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki told Canadian broadcaster CBC earlier this month that Ukraine deserves a “quick path” to NATO membership because it is fighting Russia’s invasion “in the interests of” the Western military alliance and defending NATO countries against potential aggression by Moscow.

The news followed reports of a string of drone and missile attacks by Russia over the weekend. As of Saturday evening, three people had reportedly been killed, and at least 36 injured by strikes around Odesa, with another person killed and one wounded in the region of Kharkiv.

Today is day 473 of Russia’s war on Ukraine.

Local officials are urging swimmers to exercise caution when going into the water after the recent tragic drowning of a 28-year-old man in a lake in the Otomin district of Gdańsk.

Witnesses reported that the 28-year-old failed to resurface after submerging in the lake. Firefighters called to the scene were able to locate the man but were unable to revive him despite extensive resuscitation efforts. The exact circumstances of the drowning are currently under investigation.

In light of this tragic event, police are reminding swimmers to exercise caution when engaging in water activities. Officials emphasize that it is crucial to know your limits, avoid entering the water while under the influence of alcohol, and only swim in authorized areas.

A real Kashubian Fischmarkt was on display at Targ Rybny yesterday, accompanied by the parade of three traditional “pomeranian” boats along the Motława.

After the boats landed near the Green Gate, the parade of Kashubian descendants continued down Długa Street to Dwór Artusa, where Gdańsk officials symbolically handed over the keys to the city.

Visitors to the Fischmarkt had a chance to experience traditional Kashubian culture as fishermen from the Hel peninsula wove nets, displayed old glass buoys, and demonstrated how people spent their leisure time generations ago.

Fischmarkt is a tradition dating back to the 14th century, when Ludolf König, the 20th Grandmaster of the Teutonic Order, granted the inhabitants of Gdańsk the right to trade fish as a commodity. The following year, Kashubian fishermen from the Hel peninsula brought their catches to Gdańsk in “pomeranian” fishing boats, beginning the tradition of supplying the region’s inhabitants with fresh fish and other seafood delights.

Saturday’s Fischmarkt is part of the second annual “Kashubian Days” festival from June 8-11. The Kashubian Fair continues today on Ołowianka island, with a series of temporary exhibits, discussions, and theatre performances set to take place in the coming weeks.

More information on the festival is available on the city of Gdańsk website.
