The Polish President Andrzej Duda has wished the people of Ukraine a happy Independence Day as the country celebrated its Independence Day on yesterday.
The Polish President’s Office said in a post that Duda spoke on the phone with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky „on the occasion of Ukrainian Independence Day” and wished him „a just peace,” while also „expressing the hope that next year Ukraine will celebrate this day again truly independent – free from Russian aggression.” Duda’s office noted in the post that „Poland was the first European country to recognize Ukraine’s independence 32 years ago.” Thursday marked 32 years since Ukraine regained its independence from the Soviet Union in 1991 and also exactly 18 months since Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, 2022.

An outbreak of Legionnaire’s disease in the south-east of Poland has claimed a fifth victim it has been announced.
The latest fatality of the outbreak in the city of Rzeszów is a 79-year-old local woman who also suffered from other medical conditions, according to doctors. A day earlier, a 70-year-old man died in the same Rzeszów hospital. The city’s sanitary authorities have launched an investigation into the causes of the infections and were taking measures to prevent the outbreak of an epidemic, according to reports. Officials say they have taken water samples from public drinking-water sources and from the homes of people infected with the bacteria, among other steps. As a precaution, over the coming weekend, the city’s water management system will undergo pest control, officials also announced.

Poland on Thursday picked up their fourth win at the 2023 Women’s European Volleyball Championship, having already sealed a spot in the knockout stages of the tournament.
Poland beat Slovenia 3-0 in their opening game at the tournament and followed up with a 3-1 win against Hungary. The Polish team then lost 1-3 to Serbia and defeated Belgium 3-0. The Poles will now take on Germany for a place in the quarterfinals on Sunday. The 2023 Women’s European Volleyball Championship, also known as the EuroVolley tournament, is being held in Belgium, Estonia, Germany and Italy from August 15th to September 3rd.

And finally, a huge drug smuggling ring in has been smashed by authorities after almost half a ton of cocaine worth PLN 180 million was discovered on a ship in Gdynia that was bound from South America.
The officers identified a suspicious cargo that arrived in Gdynia from Chile. Detailed examination of the cargo revealed around 440 kg of cocaine hidden among a shipment of floorboards. A 46-year-old man from the south of Poland has been arrested in connection with the discovery.
