U.S., Poland sign 5G pact as Huawei concerns persist

The United States and Poland signed a joint declaration this week pledging to keep so-called bad actors out of next generation telecoms infrastructure, as Washington continues to lobby allies to exclude Chinese telecom giant Huawei from 5G networks amid security concerns.

Huawei was not named in the agreement, signed by U.S. Vice President Mike Pence and Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki in Warsaw.

The U.S., which is currently embroiled in a trade war with China, previously flagged Huawei as a national security threat because of concerns the company could be used by the Chinese government for acts like cyber-espionage. Huawei denies the allegations.

Poland reach final four of Women’s volleyball European championships

Poland has reached the final four of the Women’s European Volleyball Championship after an inspiring five-set victory over Germany this week.

Polish team won 3-2 in their quarterfinal match before a home crowd in the central Polish city of Łódź and last Sunday they beat Spain 3-0 in the tournament’s round of 16.

This year’s tournament is being held jointly in Poland, Hungary, Slovakia and Turkey.

The semi-finals and the gold and bronze medal matches are being played in the Turkish capital Ankara this weekend and Poland will face the hosts, Turkey in the semi-final today.

Hundreds killed on Polish roads in summer

A total of 644 people were killed and over 8,100 injured on Polish roads during this year’s summer school break police statistics released this week have revealed.

A spokesman for Poland’s police headquarters added that, „The numbers are not a cause for satisfaction, but when you consider that the death toll is several hundred less than a year ago, and several hundred fewer people were injured than a year ago, then the picture looks completely different.”

Meanwhile, 203 people drowned during the summer vacation period, which saw Poles taking to the water to cool off amid a heat-wave.

A spokesman said the death toll from drowning was down by 15 compared to last summer, even though the holidays were longer than in 2018.

Solidarity removes its logo from the Medal of Gratitude awarded to Timmermans

The board of the Solidarity Trade Union has removed the Solidarity logo from the Medal of Gratitude that is awarded by the European Solidarity Centre in Gdańsk. According to Solidarity’s current CEO, this was a reaction to the medal being awarded to the Vice President of the European Commission Frans Timmermans who has been critical of Poland during his tenure as the European Commission president. The Medal of Gratitude is awarded to honour foreigners who supported Poland in its fight for freedom and democracy and 678 people from all over the world have so far received it.

Today will be bright with a gentle breeze bringing cloudier conditions and a few light rain showers towards the early evening. Temperatures will reach 19 degrees centigrade, 66 degrees Fahrenheit during the day, dropping to 11 degrees centigrade (52 degrees Fahrenheit) during the night.
Sunday will turn rainy with drizzle likely in the morning and into the early afternoon, although it should clear up later in the day. Temperatures will reach 19 degrees centigrade, 66 degrees Fahrenheit.
