More than 30 people were reported injured, six of them seriously, after a bus collided with two trucks on a road under construction in southern Poland on Thursday afternoon.

Some 40 people, most of them Ukrainian nationals, were travelling on the bus when the accident occurred near the city of Częstochowa shortly before 2 pm. A spokesman for fire-fighters noted that one of the trucks caught fire as a result of the collision. Some 30 fire crews and four medical rescue helicopters were deployed to the scene and the road was blocked in both directions.

Poland’s ruling Law and Justice party has prepared a bill aiming to help remove the pay gap between men and women performing the same jobs. Party leader Jaroslaw Kaczynski was the first party member to place a signature of approval under the draft legislation.

A spokesman for the youth conservative group that had come up with the legislative idea, said that there are still places in Poland where women receive a lower pay for doing the same job as men. He said the legislation broadens the concept of mobbing by adding gender pay inequality to the definition. The government equality commissioner, quoted a survey showing that close to 70 percent of Polish women consider that there is a pay gap issue in Poland.

Polish authorities have detained two Iraqi men suspected of financing so-called Islamic State, officials said on Thursday. The suspects were arrested by Poland’s Internal Security Agency in the south-western city of Wrocław on Tuesday, according to the gov.pl website.

A spokeswoman for Poland’s National Public Prosecutor’s Office said that the detained men have been charged with financially aiding “the international terrorist organisation known as Islamic State”. She added that the two suspects have been remanded in custody for three months following a court order. They face up to 12 years in prison if found guilty of the charges.

And finally, Wajdeloty Street in Gdańsk Wrzeszcz will not be pedestrianised after local residents voted down the idea. A survey set up by the city council showed that the majority of residents are not in favour of pedestrianising the road – an idea that was trialled recently.

The idea came from local restaurateurs who wanted to make up for the losses caused by the long closure of their premises due to the coronavirus pandemic. However, from the beginning a large proportion of residents have been against this solution with the survey results showing that two thirds of residents were against the idea. City officials will now look at other ways to revitalize the street.
