Radio Gdansk News in English: Calls mount for Germany to rethink Nord Stream 2 after Navalny poisoning

A European response that involves the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline is needed against Russia after the poisoning of Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny with a Soviet-style Novichok nerve agent, some politicians and diplomats in Germany said on Thursday.

Chancellor Angela Merkel said she expected Moscow to join efforts to clear up what happened and that Germany would consult its NATO allies about how to respond, raising the prospect of new Western sanctions on Russia. Navalny is currently in intensive care in a hospital in Berlin. A German military laboratory believes that he had been poisoned with Novichok, the government said on Wednesday. Moscow has denied involvement in the poisoning of Navalny, a long-time critic of Putin’s rule, and the Russian foreign ministry said Germany’s assertion was not backed by evidence.

A new English-language website aims to encourage international audiences to find out more about the history of modern Poland. The DiscoverPolishHistory.com website highlights events from 20th-century Polish history such as the 1920 Battle of Warsaw against the Russian Bolsheviks, the Katyn Massacre of Polish officers and intellectuals by the Soviets during World War II, and the massacre of Poles by Ukrainian nationalists in the 1940s. It also tells the story of Poles sent to German death camps and focuses on the part played by Polish pilots in the Battle of Britain. The initiative pays tribute to Poles who helped save Jews from the Holocaust and recounts the rise of Poland’s Solidarity freedom movement in the early 1980s.

A Russian Su-27 fighter jet has violated Danish airspace over the Baltic Sea at the end of last week in an incident that marked a significant breach of international law NATO’s Allied Air Command has said. The Russian Su-27 was flying from the Kaliningrad region near the Polish border, according to NATO’s Allied Air Command. A NATO statement said that the jet followed an American B52 well into Danish airspace over the Baltic island of Bornholm. The commander of NATO’s Allied Air Command, was quoted as saying that the incident “demonstrates Russia’s disrespect of international norms and for the sovereign airspace of an Allied nation.”

And finally, the company behind the failed Mevo bike rental project has won a an appeal to have it excluded from the tender process for the successor of the first scheme Mevo 2. The company was excluded from talks in June this year due to the improper implementation of the Mevo 1.0 project. The decision to include Nextbike Polska SA in the dialogue will extend the tender procedure by several week and any new system will not be in place until next year. The president of Sopot and vice president Gdańsk-Gdynia-Sopot Metropolitan Area Council said he was disappointed with the decision.
