Radio Gdansk News in English: Facebook reverses decision to block documentary on WWII German camp for Polish children from being promoted abroad

Facebook has reversed a decision that prevented a documentary film about a WWII Nazi German camp for Polish children from being promoted abroad after media coverage yesterday highlighted the decision. The makers of the film discovered that Facebook had blocked the film being promoted outside of Poland because Facebook considered it to be political.

A spokeswoman for the film maker said that the film presents only facts about the camp. The documentary is about a camp set up by German occupiers in the central Polish city of Łódź in 1942. The camp was intended for Polish children aged from 6 to 16, but children as young as several months old were also detained there.

One of Poland’s top comic artists dies

One of Poland’s most acclaimed graphic novel artists, Henryk Chmielewski, has died at the age of 97. Henryk Jerzy Chmielewski, known under the alias Papcio Chmiel, was famous for his „Tytus, Romek i A’Tomek” comic book series. The series debuted in 1966 and told the story of an anthropomorphic chimpanzee by the name of Tytus, who struggles to become human. Chmielewski created 31 books in the series, with the last one published in 2008. Papcio Chmiel’s graphic novels are characteristic for their puns, word play and absurdist humour. His work, aimed mainly at young people, often explores Polish history, art and science.

Jewellery store robbery in Gdańsk Wrzeszcz

And finally, a robbery occurred around lunchtime yesterday at a jewellery shop on Grundwalzka street in Gdańsk Wrzeszcz when three masked men entered the shop and sprayed staff and customers with pepper spray before making off with jewellery worth up to 50,000 PLN. Police believe the men were not Polish citizens, noting that they had eastern sounding accents indicating they may have been Russian or Ukrainian. One woman was injured during the raid as she was pushed over by the attackers when they entered the store. The perpetrators walked away from the scene, but Police believe they had a getaway car nearby.
