In a major re-election campaign speech, Poland’s president yesterday outlined a plan for more aid to the unemployed, including a special allowance to workers who lose their jobs due to the coronavirus crisis.

President Duda said in the televised speech that the new “solidarity allowance” would come to PLN 1,200 (EUR 260, USD 290) a month and be paid over a period of three months. He also said that the regular unemployment benefit should go up to PLN 1,300 a month from the current 900 PLN a month. Poland’s presidential elections are due to take place on May 10, with a potential second round scheduled for May 24. The Polish parliament on April 6 passed a bill under which presidential elections would be held by postal vote.

Polish President Andrzej Duda this week wrote a letter to European leaders urging greater cooperation amid the coronavirus pandemic. Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki last week called for a “new Marshall Plan” for Europe to aid the continent’s recovery from the coronavirus crisis.
